Actually I do too, only with a 1K resistor.  I've done that with the IC-706,
PROII, and the 1000MP (regular and MARK-V) - works great.  Several years now
with this configuration.  I added the 2n2222 transistor for my PTT line, but
feed the FSK directly through the 1K resistor.
