Hi everybody
Back from hollidays in 9A... with lot of sun, and everything needed for good
hollidays. Almost no time to unload the luggages from the car, that I was
already in the SARTG contest...
Good one... looks as I managed quite OK, as only very few stations gave me a
number greater than mine (RW9C,C4C, PI4CC, LZ9R...)...
As I am not using any fancy SO2R, yagi stack, beverage, high tower, very high
power or any secret weapon, I still can't explain why my modest setup is
performing so well; OK I have sloping terrain and good take-off toward north,
but don't believe it replaces a 80'tower, and/or the proximity of the sea...
(mountaneous area are not known for being good places for HF)
Big antennas high in the sky are still supposed to do a better job than small
ones at low-height ;-) (*)

Anyway, only the first of a long series of TTY contest weekends...so we'll have
many opportunities to compete again (as any pinball player knows; it's more fun
to compete !).

(*)I am not joking: The antennas I am using are the ones which appear on my
E-QSL. The only improvement since the picture was taken is that the homebrew
coax-trap 30/40/80 dipole has been replaced by 2 trapless dipoles for 40 and
80(fed by the same coax), which improved the 40 perf... but the
rotating "windsurf" fiberglass mast is still used to support the low bands
inverted-V dipoles some 6m above the tribander (The 2el/bd tribander is only
12m above the ground). Does not look terribly professional, compaired to the
big contest stations you can see in ham-magazines, but seems to work quite OK !
At least well enough to have fun !

First attempt in this contest. Thanks to the contest original 3 periods format,
it has been easy to achieve the full 24 hours despite some other commitments...

Everything went extremely well, especialy taking into account my modest domestic
setup and  the  DX conditions on the high bands: 15 and 20m poor to JA and W
with most QSO's achieved with very thin S/N ratios and 10m empty most of the
time (although the band opened several times through E's, an that according to
the beacons - and 4Z8EE signal- some F-pathes were also open). Anyway, we have
to get used to it...  The good weekend surprises: EM1HO, DU7/G4DUM, HR1RMG,
KP2D, ZP5DBC...  the 5 banders: C4C, SM5FUG, SM6CNN, SK4RY, SP6GCU. But once
again did not manage to find/hear GU0SUP on any band... (Phil I am damned !)
Also the first serious contest attempt with my new station setup: New
transceiver, new homebrew 2Ghz PC (with lot of memory and  COM ports...). N1MM
performed extremely well on the new machine... really a great product... when
the processing power is available, I do believe that this "freeware"  is now
better than anything else... (i.e the MMTY/AFC auto-switch / mark freq. reset
when switching from run to S&P).  The proII filters also did great job on the
crowded 20/40 bands, and really appreciated the spectrum display for ex. to
quickly check 10m openings... Just missing a 100' tower and a quieter location
now !
