No need to look very far back -- there was a recent QST article on FM 
sidebands.  I don't remember which (don't have my QSTs here with me) 
but I remember there is a reference to FM on the cover itself.

Old timers simply used Terman's rule of thumb to quickly compute FM 
bandwidths.  Here is a nice obit of Terman:

Unfortunately the author of the obit, O. G. "Mike" Villard, W6QYT 
recently went silent key himself.  W6QYT introduced many QST readers to 
how SSB worked in the '50s.  Some might remember his "Selecto-ject" 
circuit in QST.  He also wrote QST articles in the 1950s with A. M. 
Peterson (ex-W6POH, S.K.) on backscatter and meteor scatter.
