Thanks for the help

I have found the problem

I had loaded some software to update the programs on my niece's Vtech
educational toy look a like laptop

This had installed a TSR utility that scans the comports looking to see
it the Vtech has been plugged in.

What a pain why do manufactures / software writers do this?
