[RTTY] FSK Shift Question

When using MMTY in N1MM for contests with my second radio the FT990,  I use FSK but many stations tell me I'm off frequency.  I use the HAM shift in the setup.  Should I use FIXED or FSK for the shift?  I don't have any problems using MMVARI with AFSK with the 990 but I'd rather use FSK.  The ALC is difficult to control with the 990.  Before you know it, when changing frequency, my gain jumps way up.  I'd like the stability of FSK.
