I looked into this issue and didn't find an option to specify the audio 
player that PowerPoint will use.

The closest you can achieve only works for the original audio files 
themselves (MP3's in this case, played outside of PP). You can right click 
an MP3 and then select "Open with..." from the helper menu. You then choose 
among the variety of players installed on your computer. This action does 
not change your setting for the default player, it only bypasses it.

Of course this is of no help when viewing a PowerPoint presentation. As you 
discovered, it defaults to the Microsoft Medial Player. Maybe someone knows 
a work-around but I was not able to find anything.
