[RTTY] AFSK vs FSK question

David,

The trend with RTTY is more toward software demodulation - and it's been
that case for years now. Dedicated terminal units like KAM are functional -
but unless you have a 1990 vintage PC in your shack, your current PC along
with something simple like MMTTY would provide far better flexibility and
functionality.

On the transmit side, the answer is more of a split. Typically I believe
these answers to FSK or AFSK tend to follow more along the lines of "this is
how I started - so this is how I run it now." At one time, there was a
technical argument that FSK provided a more clean signal but that is not the
case for quite some time now. Look back in the posts written by CHEN and
you can get more details there than are digestible by the average human.

Getting AFSK running is not any more complicated than getting FSK running -
just different. And typically, if you already have your rig setup for any
digital mode other than RTTY, it's easy to start using AFSK as it's
generally configured in the same way that AFSK is setup.

The answer to this question depends on what you want to do. If you are
interested in looking at only one single frequency and are not interested in
any other modes, then a simple FSK configuration is the way to go. But if
you think you are interested in PSK or some other digital mode, then the
same interface that let's you work in AFSK will work for all of these.
