REPLY:

The only source I have is my recollection of the comments made
afterward. After the two or three HSS contests (I don't remember
exactly how many) interest faded rapidly and I have always believed
the error rate was the main reason. 

After all, if the error rate was no worse, why wouldn't folks be
clamoring to make a higher speed standard?
