I agree as well. But nothing needs to be created! Anyone can make a
nomination to the CQ HOF (general, DX or Contest). For those who remarked
"why did it take so long for Don to be inducted", I reply, "why didn't you
make a nomination sooner?"
Don's introduction into the CQ Contest Hall of Fame is even more meaningful
because the HOF award is NOT restricted to just the RTTY mode. Don's
nomination was successful in the presense of many other nominations of world
class contesters who are unknown in RTTY contesters, and that is more
meaningful to me than if it were a RTTY-only award.
Yes, much of Don's contribution to radiosport in recent years has been in
the RTTY mode, but he also is on the DXCC CW Honor Roll, operating CW and
SSB as well. Although he is most well-known for giving back to the RTTY
mode, he has had impact beyond RTTY when contesters take what they've
learned in RTTY contesting and apply it back to the CW and SSB modes.
I encourage people to use the CQ HOF process to nominate contesters who they
feel have made major contributions to radiosport. There is a call for
nominations every winter in CQ magazine and the deadline is usually February
or March with the selection, announcement and induction made in May. And,
starting up a separate RTTY-only award would dilute the impact and
recognition. AA5AU was inducted in the the (modeless) CQ Contest HOF with a
much larger, and very impressive, number of potential inductees. This is a
larger honor than if it were only RTTY nominations.
