One of these interface manufacturers may wise up one day and include something like K4DSP's FSKit Atmel chip (ATTiny45, $2.20 in unit quantities at Digikey) into their boxes. It will immediately open them up so any software modem can use hard keyed FSK (and keyed CW) with minimal jitter.

The SignaLink is popular because it is essentially plug-and-play through a single USB cable, and it is operating system agnostic. All SignaLink has to do is add the FSKit chip and they will get plug-and-play FSK too.

The question is whether there is a sufficient market for it, and if something like that is worth $25 more.

One can also ask if rig manufacturers could not add an AFSK-to-FSK converter right inside their transceiver. Especially rigs that have built-in sound cards.
