I have a 551D and this is my conclusion also.  I recently made up a 
cable to connect with my HAL ST-8000 modem (via the mic jack).  Using a 
separate receiver, it appeared that the 551D was transmitting RTTY 
successfully.  However, since it is AFSK there will be an issue of 
tuning with other stations.
