Contests are a great time to experiment and check out equipment, antennas
and operating techniques. I believe the first contests (in the 1930s) were
actually conceived as tests of propagation. We've figured that out and now
they are truly contests but they still serve as test benches. I participate
in lots of contests just to experiment, especially on RTTY which has a
large computer component with lots of choices and variables.

This was another great contest. Thanks to everyone who participated at
whatever
level.

Before you laugh me off, allow me to explain....I'm not a low band
specialist. I
have antennas that allow me to operate down to 160 (and I have WAS on 80
and a
handful of 160 Qs to prove it), though not well. Doing a single band 80m
effort served 2 purposes: first, it allows me to focus on technique and
study
propagation on a single band without having the crutch of band changes to
salvage things; and due to my schedule over the weekend, 80m matched my
availability.
