AA5VU - Careful - RTTY is contagious and habit forming - you might even become dependent, needing a "fix" occasionally!  I have enjoyed NPOTA too.  Glad you gave contesting a Go.  See you on the radio.

Antennas:  Multi-Band Dipole at 30 feet.
Comments:

First contest of any kind in 12 years.

Far too many distractions at home for a serious effort.  The wife, dog,
phone ringing, people banging on the front door (no,  not to complain
about my radio operations) and people stopping by. Soccer, Baseball and
Football games on the tele. ETC.  Overall though I had a lot of fun.
Thanks all.

Things that need to be upgraded or fixed...
1.  Baluns on all the dipoles.
2.  Install some sort of vertical.
3.  A new interface that will do True FSK.  AFSK really sucks.
4.  TCXO and Crystal Filters in the radio.  Audio DSP really really sucks.
5.  A different location to conduct operations.  Maybe a portable op
somewhere but that could be tough this winter.

Of course all this has to be done on a very limited ham radio budget.

Thanks

73

Thom KI8W

I am interested.  What I would like to see in a SS amp is:
- Antenna Tuner - this is a deal breaker.
- Able to switch bands following the transceiver at full output.  I can do
this with the Alpha 87a.
- Quiet operation.  This means fans and T/R switching with QSK.  If it is on
par with my Alpha 87a, that will suffice.
- Real-time monitoring of critical parameters.
- Temperature monitoring readout for the transistors.  Consistently running
them too hot *will* shorten their life.  See below ICAS service.
- Linear to legal output at 2:1 VSWR.  This requires lots of headroom.
- Adequate fault protection. In other words, Bullet Proof operation.

NOTE: It says 100% duty cycle, but then specifies 1500W ICAS  (Intermittent
Commercial and Amateur Service), not CCS (Continuous Commercial Service).
So is it or is it not?

REPLY:

I wondered about that too. 100% duty cycle should mean just that, with
no qualifiers such as ICAS. I will get that clarified before I buy
one.

Comments:

What a roller-coaster of a contest!  Worse than horrid conditions much of the
time.  Then, bands would open, sometimes brilliantly, and produce tremendous
results.

Only W4AAW operated from the shack.  Of the 1,979 contacts made, 1,523 of them (77%)
were made by remote operators in the following locations:

MM0LID    Scotland
WS7I          Washington State
AA5AU      Louisiana
ND3D        Maryland
W6IHG      Virginia
N1MGO    Massachusetts
K4XD        North Carolina
W4TMO      North Carolina

The Internet connection was solid for the whole 48 hours.

Don-AA5AU operated several hours as SO2R from Louisiana.

Hats off for Scott-MM0LID who made a whopping 678 QSOs by himself, which is 34%
of the total Qs.  Pretty astounding!

(The record for MOMT operation in JARTS from North America was set by NK7U with
1,295,604 with 1,638 Qs.  We achieved the claimed score and QSO totals shown in
the boxes above and hope we may have set a new record score in this category.)

The whole team wishes to thank all those we contacted for their patience.  Copy
at both ends was, at times, extremely difficult.

Thanks to the contest sponsors for this wonderful mainstay in RadioSport.

We look forward to working you in all the major RTTY, SSB and CW contests.

I have been a chaser in the ARRL's 2016 NPOTA event and have not been in many contests until this weekend where I played around in the JARTS WW RTTY Contest.  I used the Kenwood TS-590SG, macOS 10.12 (Sierra) with fldigi-3.23.15 and the setup worked great for the first 50 or so QSOs on Saturday. When I restarted the contest on Sunday, it was pretty obvious the fldigi dupe checker was not working correct as I got the dreaded WORKED B4 response.

After several frustrating resets, I finally figured out that I had checked the box in the fldigi Contest configuration panel for Time span over x minutes. I UNCHECKED "Time span over? option, saved the configuration and the dupe checker started working normal again.

Ed, W3NR, explained the Time Span is usually used in UHF/VHF contests where a Rover is involved. You have to wait x amount of time before you can work him again.  I have no idea when or why I checked and saved the Time Span option but unchecking and saving the setting fixed the dupe checker for HF contests.

It was fun to make a few QSOs in the JARTS WW RTTY Contest.  The JARTS contest exchange is RST and AGE and when you pull the fldigi Cabrillo Report, you will know why this is an OM?s hobby.  The youngest I worked was 15 and the oldest was 90 but he mean seemed to about 71.

JARTS was fun and fldigi made it enjoyable!
