[RTTY] One Pet Peeve

Not to be argumentative here…

So I send the exchange twice.  One gets wiped out by the “static crash”.  What do you do? Now you’ve only seen the exchange once.  Do you ask for a repeat?

Contesting is a set of decisions, done real time.  If I’m running and I get more than the usual number of repeat requests, I’ll likely start sending the exchange twice for a while.  Band conditions change. QRM changes.

I operate RTTY the same way I operate CW. There is really little difference other than the way the “data” is decoded.  The human decoder has some advantages, to be sure. But using multiple decoder windows can make up for some of the deficiencies in RTTY decoding.

The “extra few seconds” can be a factor.  Make 2000 Qs in 24 hours (average 83/hour).  2 seconds per Q is about 60 minutes. So it could mean 80 – 100 more Qs. That’s a 5% increase.  Significant, I would say.

You have to believe that the receiving station is not hearing you great such
as what David describes.  I mean, it's common sense, what on earth is an
extra
couple seconds going to make.  I agree with David, always send it twice as
there are so many reason's why just once may not be heard.
