I grew up in DX'ing with my constant companion TWCDXB as a local fan of
Cass while living in Vallejo CA just north of SF. He is a treasured
contributor who will be sorely missed.

Suprisingly good conditions given all the solar
hiccuping going on. Did seem like signals from
the Northwest were way down though. It was very
heartening to here a number of stations from
the gulf coast region participating (W5WMU,
KZ5D, N4OGW, etc).

Biggest mistake was working VE6KG 2 minutes
before the contest start on 20 CW and not
keeping him on frequency for the start. Never
heard him again :):) Also, heard but not
worked Maine and Alabama.

Nice to work many familiar calls as well as
a number of newcomers.

>From Marin IJ, Sept. 11, 2005.

  Hugh Alderick Cassidy
Hugh Alderick Cassidy
Born June 6, 1917, died peacefully on September 9th 2005. He was 88
years old. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Marion
Cassidy, brothers John, Francis and Robert. He is survived by Virginia,
his loving wife of 63 years, daughter Kathleen Sullivan, son-in-law
Douglas Sullivan, grandson Ryan Sullivan and wife Christina, and
great-granddaughter Madison Sullivan. A native of San Rafael, "Cass"
attended St. Raphael's Elementary, San Rafael High School and Memphis
State. He joined the Post Office in 1934, became Post Master in 1967 and
retired at the age of 58, in 1976, after 38 years of service. A veteran
of WWII, he served the USAF in Europe from 1942-1945. He was a history
buff and an avid reader who amassed a substantial library on the Civil
War, WWII, aviation, sailing and numerous works of nonfiction. In
addition to working for the US Postal Service, he was also president of

Amateur Radio Club. Hugh was a multi-talented individual who was a
private pilot, scuba diver, ham radio operator, hiker and back packer,
author of the West Coast DX Bulletin and numerous articles for DX

hobby, liked to build computers from scratch. He was part of a declining
breed of individuals who served their country and were proud to do so.
He had a keen sense of humor and was a dynamic individual who made an
impression on everyone he met. He will be greatly missed by family and
friends alike. Visitation will be at Keaton's Mortuary, 1022 E Street,

Jim - I knew Cass in a venue unrelated to DX: a 75-meter traffic net
called the Mission Trail Net. I joined MTN in 1965 (high school days)
and I'm still a member, albeit not nearly as active as I was in the
'60s, '70s, and '80s.

Cass was a frequent check-in and traffic handler on MTN in the '60s, and
'70s, possibly longer. It was years later that I realized he was also a
DX "nut," publishing a newsletter and collecting tidbits about chasing
DX. I think he can be categorized as someone we can all look up to:
for service to amateur radio, and for living a long life of contributing
to others.

73 - Jim, K6ZH

I only new him through the book "DX IS! The Best of the West Coast DX
Bulletin". What a treasure! He was surely one of the deserving.
