I don't recall either, but do recall that legal amps of the day made
good drivers and were to be seen glowing away in that service.
When I was going thru Navy nuclear power school in Vallejo CA one year
in either the ARRL or CQWW fone I was calling some DX on 75. K6UA multi
was in there as well, surely going to work the DX long before me but
having to call more than once. Of a sudden the voice changed to Dale's,
the S meter went from 20 or 30 over to on the pin and naturally, one
call did it all. Must have changed antennas or something...........
The other unforgettable event was raising his 40 yagi back to the top of
a crankup tower. John WB6QGN and I were on the tower as the antenna came
slowly up, pulled by Dale's tractor. Of a sudden a pulley came loose,
the antenna crashed to the ground, and the now-unloaded tower gave John
and I a real snappy ride. Dale had rigged the block (my block!) not too
well. Since it was my block, I took the heat from the extensive ground
crew. I still use the block, which has never again come loose.
RIP old boy, CU up there. Or down there.

I remember W6VSS and others getting busted by the FCC in the ARRL DX Contest
of 1957 or 1958 for excessive power. I was always curious about how much
power Dale was running at the time. Does anyone recall this? There was a reason
for the phonetics, W6 Very Strong Signal.
