[SCCC] A memory of N6ZZ

I know there will be a huge outpouring
of shock and grief over the passing of
Phil Goetz, N6ZZ. Surely there will be
many postings here and elsewhere recalling
his life and achievements in amateur radio.

I'd like to share a story about one of the
more offbeat contesting adventures Phil
ever undertook. In a weak moment, he
agreed to go on a VHF-UHF roving expedi-
tion during VHF SS in January, 2005, and
recruited N2IC to join him.

Four of us (K2MM, N6MU, W6XD and myself)
drove to Alamogordo from California to meet
him, picking up N2IC along the way. We
outfitted Phil's Blazer with a 10-band VHF+
station and took off on a route that was
more ambitious than anything we would have
otherwise considered. Phil had looked
at our itinerary and said, "we can do
more." That resulted in the three best
scores ever recorded in a VHF contest.
I can see why Phil is on everyone's
Top Ten list as a contester and a
gentleman.

What a loss this is.

Wayne Overbeck, N6NB
