We're all that way, although some are better than others.  In that regard,
the
best of us are those who've learned to hear during contests what the
ionosphere is doing RIGHT NOW.  It works so much better than predicting.
You have to react to what you hear, and experience is king in this regard.

Californians have a lot of trouble with 40 m during contests.  We seem to
be able to hear all of these guys in the Midwest and East Coast but when
we call them they can only hear each other.  In the history of contesting,
nobody in California ever thought they were loud enough on 40 meters.

Or any other band, come to think of it.
