We took out toy hauler to the Mojave Desert, 20 minutes off the paved road,
near California City. We could not see another trailer, even from the hill
tops
while riding our quads. I bought a Max-Gain MK-8-HD (50 ft pushup)and ran a
fan
dipole for 40/20m. We were only able to get the dipole up to 35-40 feet due
to
weight of the RG-213 and 5kw balun.

Jay, W2IJ, my elmer, and his son Mark, WA2FIJ, joined me. Both are
non-contestors,
although Jay has put Kingman Reef and Clipperton on the air. Mark has never
been interested in HF but his ears proved good for logging his Dad's QSOs
into
Writelog (must be the young age and his experience as a pilot).

The onboard Onan 4kw generator could not handle the Heathkit SB-220 running
600-1000w on 120v, even with the AC off. I am glad I lugged out the Chinese
Honda-clone 3500 watt generator... it handled the amplifier, my laptop, and
a
fan no problem. The air conditioning and other onboard power requirements
were
handled easily by the Onan.

335 watts of solar panels fed via a Morningstar Tri-star 45 charging 4
Trojan
T-105's handled the needs of my FT-2000 and other RV 12v specific draws.

The only hassles were high winds on Friday during setup, heat (to be
expected)
and a coiled rattler at my feet while taking camp site pictures (Mr. Gaston
Glock can be thanked for my not having to go to the hospital Saturday
night).
