I was digging through my file cabinet this evening, looking for an old
equipment manual. I think I have that manual somewhere around here, but I
didn't find it tonight. Instead, I came across six very old SCCC Bulletins.
I'm not very organized with my old mags and bulletins, but I've never thrown
out a single SCCC bulletin out since discovering the club 30 or so years
ago.
One day, I hope to scan and upload them to the club web site. Perhaps when
our new web site is ready, I can ask Bruce for a spot to put them.
Here are some tidbits from the bulletins I found tonight:
December, 1980
There is a red "X" on the mailing label, meaning that I need to pay my dues
of $3! The stamp on the envelope is a 15 cent stamp! Remember those?
N6TR is President, and the bulletin is two pages, printed front and back. It
was printed on a dot matrix printer and photo copied.
The front page says that SCCC meetings are held monthly on the first
Thursday of the month at the DWP Building in Los Angeles.
Tree says, "Our club is beginning to generate some enthusiasm around the
southland. The news of our regular meetings is spreading fast, and I expect
meeting attendance to grow over the next few months. I hope the atmosphere
that we have as a small group will be maintained as the numbers grow."
Tree also goes on to also propose some new organization of the club by
adding new officers. To get started, he proposes President,
Vice-President/Contest Chairman, and Secretary/Treasurer. He appoints WA6OTU
to VP/Contest Chairman, admitting that the appointment doesn't follow
current bylaws.
Next are a couple of For Sale ads. N6VR has a Hygain 204BA for $50. And
N6IC has a CX7A for sale (no price listed).
The next page is Mark, WA6OTU introducing himself to the club as VP/Contest
Chairman. And he immediately begins to fire up the troops.
The last page is a tongue-in-cheek description of the Classification of
Contesters.
January, 1981
This came in the same envelope as my December issue. I think Tree was trying
to get me to join the club.
The bulletin says that the pizza meeting held on January 17 was a big
success. In attendance were N6AA, W6EE, N6MM, N6NI, WA6OTU, W6RR, AA6RX,
N6TJ, N6TR and N6ZZ. Two new members joined: N6NI and N6ZZ.
The bulletin went on to say that the idea of regular Saturday meetings in
place of the Thursday meetings was gaining steam.
Also mentioned were the upcoming ARRL DX CW and NA Sprint contests.
Tree tells us that SCCC is being re-affiliated with ARRL.
This issue also includes a Club Roster.
April, 1981
This issue no longer has the red "X" on the envelope. I must have joined up!
"SCCC meets on random days and at random times in order to avoid discovery."
Next meeting is at Numero Uno's in Torrance on April 25. [This location
became a regular meeting spot and was held the same Saturday as the nearby
swap meet so that we could get some good deals on gear before the
meeting! -NE6I]
SCCC is now 25 members strong, with W6TAG being our newest member.
Congrats to AA6RX who won the QRM CW contest at the last club meeting. Dave
nudged out Dick Norton, N6AA by four calls.
This issue contained the "first article in a series of radio reviews." This
month was the Drake T4/R4 series, a highly popular pair in those days.
May, 1981
This issue gets a little more formal by showing that it is "Volume II, Issue
IV" in the header.
The next meeting will again be at Numero Uno in June.
New members are N6PE, K6SE, N6CW and KR6X. This is the first time a new 2X1
call joins the ranks of SCCC.
Tree informs the club that if you missed the last meeting, you missed out on
a private tour of Don Wallace's W6AM QTH hosted by N6TJ. [I believe this is
the same tour from which my pictures came: http://qsl.net/ne6i/w6am/,
however, I show that as being in 1986. I think I based that on the dates on
the photo envelopes. Perhaps I mixed up the envelopes? If anyone can
confirm, please let me know! -NE6I]
Tree seems like he is a little agitated in this issue. He apparently
received a few complaints about where meetings were being hosted, and offers
curt instructions on how to submit suggestions for alternate sites, and
mentions that the form for complaints is quite easy: "just tell me when you
want to take over." He also mentions that he isn't going to originate all
of the club's activities, and encourages everyone to provide input.
He thanks Mark for his review of the FT-901 and says that Dick Norton will
next month provide his thoughts on the Signal One [a radio considered to be
the top of the line by most of us at the time].
June/July/August, 1981
Volume II, Issue V
A one page, double sided bulletin.
Six new members, bringing us to 35: N3EG, N6MM, N6PN, N6MI, K6NA and KV6O.
SCCC has challenged NCCC in the All Asian Contest later this month. It's a
contest within a contest, and scoring is defined. No mention of what the
winner receives, but bragging rights are always welcomed.
Tree apologizes for the three month delay in bulletins but cites the slow
summer contest season as the reason.
September, 1981
Volume II, Issue VI
"The club now has so many new members, I can hardly keep track of them
all!!!", writes Tree. Membership is now 40 strong and the treasury is at a
record high of $72.99! (Our only expense is mailing bulletins.)
Next meeting is back at Numero Uno. A "Tree" map is included. A "Tree" map
is the pre-cursor to Google maps.
The August meeting held in Anaheim (at Firehouse Pizza near HRO) was
attended by N6AA, N6DFY, KB6I, WB6KOU, W6LEN, WA6OTU, N6PE, N6RJ, AA6RX,
NC6T, N6TR, K3VA and W6XD. [I was timing my application for a new 2X1 call
to try to get an NC6 or ND6 call. This was way before the World Wide Web,
and word of mouth was essentially the only way to keep track of what was
being issued. Seeing NC6T's call in print shot a stake through my heart,
and I mailed my app the next day. I figured the NC6's were gone but I might
get an ND6 call. You now know how that worked out... This is well before
vanity calls. Back then, you applied to trade in your old call for a 2X1 if
you held an Extra Class license and desired a new 2X1 call. - NE6I]
Tree asks for All Asian results from Club members so that he can compile our
score and share with NCCC. [Remember, no internet back then! -NE6I]
Tree tells us that NC6T is the former WB6SHL.
Tree announces that he has been running the Club for a year now and is
running out of things to say, and beats the drum to find a replacement. He
informs us that he can continue to publish the bulletin but that "I'm
running out of bullshit!!!" [to write].
I don't remember what happened next...who became President, etc. I will
have to try to locate my other copies of SCCC Bulletins. I do know that the
current bulletin name, SCCCORE, was not on the horizon yet. Tree had
renamed it in the September issue, "So Cal Contester's Guild". It was a bit
later that we came up with some prospective new names and voted SCCCORE as
the new name.
