[SCCC] From the "rover Godfather"

Um, I'm not sure if I like being called
the "rover Godfather." But I would like
to emphasize how much of a team effort
by fixed stations as well as rovers the
SCCC victory in the June VHF contest
really was.

The N6TEB multioperator group had the highest
score of any west coast station in the
contest, operating under primitive condi-
tions at the end of a long dirt road in a
place with no commercial electricity or
even running water (my cabin).

WB2WIK had the highest single operator score
on the west coast. His low power entry beat
every high power single op west of the
Rockies. That's all the more impressive
when you know that he did it in the flatlands
of Orange County, at a decidedly mediocre VHF
location (my house).

Also, I don't think the mere recitation of
rover winners in the ARRL web report does
justice to our rovers. SCCC had the top
eight rover scores in the country. Carrie,
W6TAI, roved solo and outscored all 91 other
rover stations in the contest, many of them
manned by two operators. She drives,
operates and logs by herself. This win is
surely a first for a YL rover.

For the club, this fourth VHF+ club gavel
proves that with the right operating talent,
strategy and hardware, it's often possible
for a west coast club to win--under the
present rules. Of course, there's a lot of
talk now about changing the rules to restore
the traditional order of things (i.e., with
eastern clubs winning every gavel that is
awarded in a VHF contest).

73, Wayne, N6NB
