Actually, Dick, N6AA has developed a recommended phonetic list for use 
during DX contests.

For the letter Z, Dick recommends using Zero or Zone as the phonetic.

NC6Q would be Need Callsign 6 Question Mark

Better phonetic for Z? When someone spells something with a "Z," I
always
ask, "Is that Z like in Xylophone?" They always answer in the
affirmative,
and I've had my laugh of the day (to myself!) I don't recommend it for
contesting, just for a laugh!
