As some of you may know, John KP2A, recently lost his wife Carole to cancer. At this point in his life, he is more interested in travelling the world and not in maintaining a home in Saint Thomas. He is currently entertaining an offer from a non-ham at a price well below market value. I told him that his real estate agent is evidently missing the market that would have the most interest in that particular property, namely the ham radio community. I told John that I would see if there was anyone with an interest in it.
The house itself is perched at the top of on one of the best hills in Saint Thomas in the North East area of the island about 800 feet above sea level. The view is spectacular as you would imagine. It looks right down the Sir Francis Drake passage with St John on the right of the passage and Tortola on the left and Virgin Gorda straight down the passage in the distance. To the Northwest it overlooks Magen's Bay. To the South you can see St Croix in the distance. To the North and Northeast, just the wide open Atlantic Ocean.
The property itself is over 2 acres. The house is 5000 sq ft., has 5 bedrooms and 3 bath rooms. The major modifications that were made after Hurricane Marilyn in 1995 have really made it able to survive hurricanes. The real issue was always all of the glass, the main house structure is steel I-beams fastened to the rock and the roof has no overhangs so that wind can't lift it. Now there are sliding shutters that can quickly be closed and locked from the inside. And anything transparent that is exposed (without shutters) is 1" thick specially made tinted plexiglass material. It also has a swimming pool that is on the East side of the property (and has the Drake Passage view). I will post some pictures and supply more details to anyone that is interested.

I have set up another e-mail account for this purpose. bob.kw8n at aol.com
