Ken,

 Taking on a "TRANSCEIVER"  may be a be a little too much for a beginner.

I would consider they build a simple Receiver first then move on from there

You might send an email to Mike Trager who builds kits for people and ask
which

kit he would recommends for a beginner as Mike has built MANY kits !
