I have a dilemma. I told my wife my dilemma over dinner one day.
She said, “So, where do all the CW operators hide?” (direct quote)
Well, I knew where some of them were and that’s the reason for this posting.
I am looking for a CW operator (or two) who lives in the Greater Long Beach
area (or nearby).
I’m a member of the Associated Radio Amateurs of Long Beach (ARALB) (in
addition to the SCCC) and like to do Field Day in June with my club every
year. But I’m the only CW operator who’s active for Field Day.
I asked a couple buddies in the club to operate in the California QSO Party
last October in Imperial County as a County M-S Expedition. I even bought a
Spiderbeam antenna for the effort. They agreed and we had a good time, but
they were not contesters, and I was the only CW op.
I participated in Winter Field Day this year with the ARALB and the Student
Radio Club at McBride High School in Long Beach. But, again, I was the only
CW op.
Now, I’m starting to get interested in operating portable on some local
islands for the U.S. Islands Award Program—CW only—but I don’t want to
operate CW alone.
Oh, I operate in many of the big CW contests from home, but my indoor attic
dipoles don’t hear very well, and I’m enjoying operating portable more and
more. So, if you’re a nearby CW operator and would like me to help set up,
tear down, and most importantly operate CW with me sometime, let me know.
I’ll be at Arnie’s for the SCCC meeting this Saturday. Find me and say hi.
Or, send me an email. Or both.
