Good question. I would say they are not allowed.
However, as a means for determining band conditions
FT8 is another tool available to an operator in the assisted
category.
I am sure there are more informed members of this list
who can shed light on the subject.

Which brings up a question.  The rules on the ARRL website says SSB and CW
only.  Is FT8 or another digital mode allowed?
