Some SCCCers will remember (and participated in) 1980s operations in Mexico
for CQWW DX contests using Juan's call, XE2SI. Our club did very well from
Tijuana in those efforts operating Multi-Multi. I was fortunate to be
invited and operate one in of those contests south of the border on CW. On
the weekend that I was down there, Juan did not actually operate as part of
the team but visited us one afternoon to see how we were doing (as I
recall.I think there were armed Mexican guards or police with him as well in
case we were out of line? A little unnerving to this relative youngster at
the time!). I had nothing to do with the organization of that particular
"ContestExpedition," and as I recall, I met up with Marty, N6VI and rode
down with him into TJ. But first, we stopped by Wayne's place (N6NB) and
picked up a trailer/tower rig. Wayne wasn't able to go with us that weekend
but was more than happy to lend his rig to the SCCC effort.

Anyway, I very occasionally run across XE2SI on the air. The most recent
occasion was this week on 6 meter FT8, of all places. I am often monitoring
the band on 50.313 waiting for those elusive Sporadic-E openings, hoping to
add to my WAS totals on the magic band. And perhaps snag a JA or KH6 (I have
yet to do so but have heard them a time or two!).

I saw Juan's call pop up a few days ago during a pretty healthy opening on
the band. Yesterday, he was back at it, calling CQ on 6. The band wasn't
really cooperating with any good Sp-E so I gave him a quick call and put him
in the log. It was nice to get an LOTW QSL from him today.

If anyone has more info, stories, background, etc. on the old 1980s XE2SI
SCCC operations, and especially pictures, I'd love to see and read about
them.

One such picture is captured here:

I'm sure you will recognize some those cool cats. (I am guessing the N6ND
tee shirt says "39 and holding." As a side note, Rick used to host many M/M
operations from his place in Ramona.
