Unfortunately, if you didn't want to spend time listening for hours to a dead band in hopes of hearing a CW or SSB signal, you needed to use FT8. I realize it may not be popular among the purists, but at least I made some Qs during my 2.5 hours of operation.

Meanwhile, out east in MD and Virginia, a few guys not only had 
European sporadic E openings, they also had JAs as late as 10:30 pm 
their time. Openings to the midwest US were sporadic and few, 
however, although one guy mentioned he worked a bunch of very loud 
VE6s during the last hour.
