>From the estate of a Silent Key, there is a Heath "Cantenna" dummy load free
for the taking in Granada Hills (north San Fernando Valley).
Also be aware that these are oil-filled (that's how they dissipate the heat
of the internal resistor). In the early days, we used to get transformer
oil from the power company to fill these loads, and it worked great.
However, that old transformer oil contained PCBs, a carcinogen, so that oil
is considered hazmat and must be disposed of properly. I do not know
whether this load contains transformer oil or the more benign mineral oil
that most people used after the old oil was no longer available. I would
say plan on hazmat disposal if and when the load is discarded.
The load has some dirt and oil on the outside, although they normally do not
leak if kept upright and if you don't boil the oil by running high power
into them for extended periods of time. Properly treated, they last for
decades.
If you want it, contact me directly.
