A good starting point for reading about the Perseid meteor shower is Bob Lundsford’s column at

In early August he will predict the times for peaks in the ZHR (zenith hourly rate) for Perseids. During years of strong showers CW and even SSB work well. See the graph on the above web site.
Early morning hours are best for sporadic meteors- you will want to use digital modes for these as they are quick and weak. So a single contact will involve many meteors.
