My first rig as KN6LSG was the AT-1 ($29.50) and a 3-6 mc ARC-5 receiver from Sam's Surplus in LA. I got my Novice license in June 1955 (I still have it). In Oct 55 QST there was an article by W1ICP "More Power from the AT-1" It changed the 6L6 final to a 6BQ6 which tripled the output from 8 watts to about 25 watts. You could tell the difference by the glow of a 25 watt light bulb held across the TV antenna knife switch contacts. When I got my Conditional license I added a VF-1. I worked 70 countries with that combo on 15 meters using a used Halli SX-25 purchased from Henry Radio before upgrading to a DX-100 in late 1957. Paper boys didn't make a lot of money! The Viking Adventurer (6AG7-807) was out of my price range at $54.95. The very first Novice WAC was made by Skip Cuevas KN6JQJ in 1955 using an Adventurer. He happened to be the son of old DXer Frank Cuevas W6AOA who allegedly may have helped set up the contacts. The Viking Adventurer ad in QST featured a photo of him and the six QSL cards.
Them were the days! 73, Kurt W6PH

Ya, the Johnson products were always something to aspire to - but not on my

P.S. to Dennis - I see you have an "other" category, but you might consider
adding Eico to the list. I knew a lot of guys who an Eico 730 xmtr.

I just KNEW I was forgetting one of the old stalwarts! How could I forget
Johnson?! I've added it to the poll now. I think if you have already voted
in the poll, you can go back and change your vote.

The poll had Gonset(!!!), Hallicrafters, Hammarlund, and Heathkit... but
left out JOHNSON???!!! I bet far more of us started out with Johnsons, than
all of those first three combined! It was years before I could even find one
of those others that I could afford! I still rember going to Henry Radio on
Olympic Blvd. and slobbering over the very few that were on the
used-equipment shelf. OHHH, the shame of it all, to be so forgotten; RIP,
E. F. Johnson... =8-/
