Comments:

The SFI was over 210 throughout the entire contest. I felt conditions were
fairly poor, particularly 40m, on which I had intended to make the majority of
my QSOs. But the polar flutter on almost all 40m signals was so bad all night
that I eventually gave up and went back to higher bands; I never even considered
trying 80m at all. Amazingly, the Europeans were still sending QRQ during this
polar flutter era; I wonder how they could copy anything? Perhaps the flutter
just did not affect them nearly as badly. Once I went back to 15m, imagine my
surprise when I found V51MA almost at midnight... I did not find very many JAs
on any band, however, not even 40m. Working South America on any band was simply
tough because I only had wire antennas, and it took a lot of calling until near
the contest end when signals finally steadied and became strong on 10m during
the last hours. Thanks to all the South Americans and others for the QSOs!
