Conditions were not what I was hoping for with a SFI=171. Saturday was average.
Sunday was very unsettled with deep QSB. My opening to Europe on Saturday was
about 1+30. On Sunday about 1 hour. Fortunately most of the European
multipliers answered my CQ's. I missed UR, LY, SV, and YO. My QSO totals were
Friday-168, Sat-793, Sun-647.
As always some things happen. We had a very high wind come through on Saturday
and turned my yagi 90 degrees from its heading. Fortunately it is easy for me
to see from the window in my shack. I have a -130 dbm noise floor in my P3. In
the middle of a good run to Europe on Saturday, I got a horrendous noise similar
to an automobile ignition but there were no vehicles near me and it raised the
grass to -90 dbm. I couldn't hear any weak signals. It lasted about 20 minutes
and then disappeared for the rest of the contest. I had some problems with my
old Dell laptop running XP. It would occasionally lock out the keying. Just a
nuisance. Time to upgrade.
My last state was WY. Toward the end of the contest I was called by AC7AF and
ten minutes later by W6KGP. That was the only missing state after Saturday.
I didn't work any zone 30 or 32. Mt Whitney (14,500 ft) is five miles west of me.
I really like the ARRL 10 Meter Contest. It is basically a daytime event
allowing normal sleep at night. Good for an 83 year old. Despite these issues
it was a great contest. The goal is to have an enjoyable time and I achieved
that.
