Comments:
I usually skip this contest entirely or participate casually, partly because
in this DX contest we don't get points for domestic contacts and my station
in suburban lot is more competitive in domestic contests and was built
domestic contest participation in mind. I have only done ARRL DX contest
once before ever full time as SOAB 4 years ago. I was again planning to
just operate few hours during the weekend but I'm glad I went to shack right
at the start to play with radio... Conditions were best I have ever heard
from this QTH in past 12 years, and I just could not step away from radio
much during 1st day, only took couple short breaks to walk around and refuel
during 1st day. 2nd day while still quite good felt much slower and I had
2.5 hours nap during the night, ended up operating 43.5 hours of the whole
thing. It was also good workout for K4D which I acquired couple months ago.
I used old K3 for other radio. K4 is good rig but I keep having much more
interstation interference with it on the desk than with pair of K3 radios or
with K3 + 7610 pair. Several times I had to swap bands on radios to get ISI
down on harmonic band or I had to position my run QRGs further from harmonic
frequency. It was still manageable but I usually never needed to consider
any of those things in my pre-K4 era in past 12 years at this QTH.
I was surprised to work few EU station when I S&Ped them on 80. It seems my
transmitted signal gets out quite OK to DX on both 80 and 160 and big
improvement could be gained if I could hear DX bit better on those bands. I
think I will try one of those directional loop set ups in future.
It was another contest to remember and those kind of conditions we had this
weekend may only happen once or twice per solar cycle during right major
contest weekend. I'm sure many records were broken and maybe some of those
will never be re-broken. Congrats to all winners and participants in this
party ! Tnx for QSOs de Marko N5ZO
