Rodney Dangerfield had a joke "I went to a fight one night, and a hockey game broke out." For me, it was "I went roving in the September VHF Contest, and a DX Contest broke out". Southern Calif. finally got a break from the 100+ temperatures the previous week, and the weather was perfect - about 80 degrees.
Murphy got me a bit as I arrived to Signal Hill, DM03, as an antique auto show was on at the local park, and my usual parking spot was taken. I only got on the air about 5 minutes late. I operated from more the east side of the hill, than the usual north side, so my shot into DM04 was probably worst than normal. At about 80 minutes into the contest, I started seeing CE6UFF on my screen on 6m FT8! I tried calling him, but couldn't complete the exchange. Tried again about 15 minutes later, and I got RR73 from him. Yes! My first ever South American QSO in a VHF Contest. There was chatter on Discord about VP8LP. His signal popped up, I called him, and YES, it was new one for me on 6 meters!
I went to a new location for me for DM04 - Hillcrest Elementary in Monterey Park *** danger power lines in one of the parking lots ***. This location worked well to the East, South and West. Its blocked to the north, so it wont be good for June VHF. It played very well to the south because I worked LU5FF. Bought some fruit from a street vendor there. Started Sunday morning off fairly late at Summit House in Fullerton for DM03. This is quickly becoming my favorite location for DM13. Its an extremely good spot to work south. I worked 2 stations in Chile, and VP8LP again. At one point VP8LP was +29 on FT8!!!! This was truly a memorable VHF Contest moment for me.
I then went to Pantera Elementary in Diamond Bar for DM04. No DX from there, and activity was petering out. I QRTed 3 hours early at 0000z. For next time I need to work on a better antenna for 2m and 440. Thank you to the locals out there for all of the contacts, especially you all in SCCC.
