[SCCC] [SBMS] N6NB N6NB\R SK

Wayne heard Greg on 5 GHz, but Greg could not hear Wayne, likely due to the higher Wi-Fi-induced noise floor on the California end. No contact was completed on that band, and Chip N6CA still holds the 5 GHz terrestrial distance record.

Wayne’s reach was far and wide. Several years ago at the VHF conference, I had a nice discussion with Wayne about his exploits setting microwave records from HI to CA. As I recall, that path had previously been worked on 1296 and 2304, but Wayne wanted to try some of the higher frequency bands.

He had configured a portable microwave station in a tool box he could check as luggage on the plane. When conditions looked favorable, he would go buy a plane ticket to HI and rent a car to drive up the mountain. He would drive up the mountain road until he could hear the beacon at his house and had a friend to get on the area for the microwave contact attempt. After more than one attempt, he made the contact I believe on 3456 and 5760. To the best of my knowledge, 10 GHz is still a plume to be plucked!

I had been to Catalina Island and suggested to Wayne that perhaps the airport there at 2,000 ft. ASL might be a good location for the CA end of the duct. Wayne, with his vast experience, said it was too high and above the duct. He said his house at 600 ft. ASL was about optimum. To say the least, my discussions with him were very informative, and it was a privilege to know him.

Hello Dave and all,

I saw the N6NB callsign and SK and my heart stopped.

Wayne was one of my ham heroes and mentors when I lived in Santa Barbara in the 80s and 90s. I was a huge Quagi fan and used four of them stacked on 432 in contests on Frazier and Pinos. They were very effective!

I remember a special day we spent together driving up and down the West Coast chasing the evasive Hawaiian beacon. It was magical talking with him all day long about everything Amateur Radio.

I moved to Arizona and lost contact with him but my ears perked up whenever I saw what he was doing or caught him remotely at an SBMS Meeting.

RIP, my friend, and enjoy operating on those optimal sites in heaven.

73,

Rod Fritz WB9KMO
