Comments:
Had unrealistic hopes for running a serious effort, but sleep deprivation,
taking care of our three kids and a Sunday afternoon date for our wedding
anniversary only let me sneak in about 1.75 scattered hours of operating
time.
Plus, my main antenna was down to accommodate landscaping construction in
our
backyard. I pushed up a G5RV doublet as an inverted vee at 25', tuned with
a remote Icom tuner. The antenna has played very well but I need more
ferrite
chokes inside and outside my house to reduce RFI. Because I haven't solved
my home RFI problems, I operated with only 5W. I did not want my
2-year-old's white noise machine playing CW during his afternoon nap!
It was hard not sensing the demographic cliff that will put an end to CW
contesting in the next decade if more young operators aren't attracted to
the hobby. I've operated Sweepstakes on and off, with varying levels of
commitment and skill, since 1994. I continue to be one of the newest CW
operators. In my opinion, there needs to be some kind of incentive built
into
contests to drive recruitment of young people. Perhaps a pivotal bonus for
working young or recently licensed operators--perhaps some kind of mult or
enhanced QSO points tied to working people with "younger" checks, or
changing the check exchange to age and tying mults to age of worked
operators.
There are lots of great people (e.g., K3LR, W1DED and his contest crew)
doing
their damnedest to attract young people to the hobby, but the incentives of
greying operators need to be aligned with the needs of recruiting the next
generation. Maybe that needs to become an explicit aspect of contest
scoring.
