The September VHF Contest Is Here!
Wow, this year is flying by—and it's already time for the ARRL September VHF Contest! The contest kicks off Saturday at 1800z (11 AM PT) and runs through Sunday at 8 PM PT. Thankfully, it looks like we might get a break from the heat, which should make roving a lot more enjoyable.
My Tentative Rover Plans:
Saturday:
Start in DM13 at Summit House in Fullerton
Then head to DM04 in Monterey Park
Sunday:
Begin at Signal Hill (DM03)
Afternoon in Diamond Bar (DM14)
If I remember to turn it on, you can track my location via APRS at www.aprs.fi — my callsign is N6GP-10.
Bands & Modes:
I’ll be operating on the four lower bands:
6 meters
2 meters
220 MHz
440 MHz
I prefer analog modes (CW and SSB), but I’ll switch to FT8 when things slow down. I mostly use FT8 on 6m to reach distant stations.
Frequencies I’ll Be Monitoring:
SSB: 50.130, 144.200, 432.100
FM: 146.52, 146.55, 146.58 (2m), 223.5 (220 FM), 446.0 (440 FM)
CW (occasional): 50.095, 144.195, 432.095
FT8: 50.313, 144.174
Reminder for Fixed Stations: There’s an analog-only class, which brought out a lot of CW activity on 6m in June. If you enjoy CW and SSB, please jump back in!
Football Fans:
Yes, it’s the 3rd week of NCAA Football and Week 2 of the NFL, but if you can hop on the air during halftimes, that would be awesome!
Anything Can Happen!
Last year, we had a TEP opening to the Falkland Islands and Chile—remember how loud they were?
Thanks to your help, I placed 4th overall in the Limited Rover class last year. With a strong turnout, I’m hoping to crack the Top 10 again this year.
Stay safe, have fun, and good luck in the contest!
73,
de Tim N6GP
