Subject: [SD-User] Boot Disk to run SD on Win 2000, ME etc.
Message-ID: <000b01c17b7a$85480240$e5a5fea9@dell>
As SD is a DOS program, it runs on all DOS-based operating systems up to,
and including, Windows 98. I've now uploaded SDBOOT.ZIP which is intended
to let users run SD on PCs using later versions of Windows.
It may be downloaded from http://www.ei5di.com/sd/sdboot.zip - size 766 kb,
and it unzips to
README.1ST
WBOOT.EXE
BOOT.BAT
To create a boot disk, you should be in a DOS window, and have the C:>
prompt - for whatever directory or folder into which you downloaded
SDBOOT.ZIP.
When you have unzipped SDBOOT.ZIP, place a blank formatted disk in drive A:
then type BOOT (followed by Enter).
All the necessary files will be copied to the disk in drive A: You can then
use this disk as a boot disk (based on Win 98) to run SD on another PC. It
will not alter or delete any files on your PC.
I've tested the boot disk on a Toshiba Tecra 8100, normally running Windows
2000, and SD runs correctly, including keying (parallel port) and rig
control (serial port). Please let me know how it behaves for you.

Message-ID: <002101c17d65$b39f1240$ab2c91ac@default>
This message was sent out to 3 reflectors yesterday at 12.30z. Arrived at
uk-contest and iota-contest ok but has failed to appear here or in the
archives. Apologies if like the buses several of the same arrive at once.
After a quick look at the new rules for IOTA 2002 I feel congratulations are
in order. There are still a few controversial points which will generate
much heated debate but overall I think it will make for a much better
contest over a greatly levelled playing field. A difficult job well done.
See the new rules at
http://www.btinternet.com/~tim.kirby/HFCC/Rules-2002/iota.htm
Time to do more antenna experiments ! Hope to work you from the Summer

Why country multipliers don't show nor grow my score, except for a couple of

How to fix the log afterwards?

Subject: [SD-User] ARRL 10 Metre Contest
Message-ID: <004401c181c8$42614dc0$e5a5fea9@dell>
The ARRL 10m contest takes place next weekend 15/16th December.
There are CW Only, SSB Only, and mixed-mode sections.
Here's how to configure SD - for both W/VE and DX.
Select Type 10 - General, County and Area Multipliers.
1. Single Mode Entry - CW Only or SSB Only
.MLT File : ARRL10
.CTY File : DXCC
Multipliers Count : B (by band - Yes, I know
it's 10m only)
Points per QSO : 4 (if CW only)
2 (if SSB only)
Pts/Bonus : 0 (multipliers)
Single/Multi-Op : S or M
Next Page : Y
Receive Serial from
Area QSOs (W/VE) : N
Mode : CW or SSB
Mixed-mode : N
______________________________________
2. Mixed Mode Entry - both CW and SSB
.MLT File : ARRL10
.CTY File : DXCC
Multipliers Count : B (by band - Yes, I know
it's 10m only)
Points per QSO : 0 (variable)
Pts/Bonus : 0 (multipliers)
Single/Multi-Op : S or M
Next Page : Y
Points / Area QSO : 0 (same as other QSOs)
Points vary by mode : Y
by band : N
by location : N
Points CW : 4
Points SSB : 2
Receive Serial from
Area QSOs (W/VE) : N
Mode : CW or SSB (your current mode)
Mixed Mode : Y
Mults count on both
modes : Y
Work same station
on both modes : Y
___________________________________________
Work everyone.
W/VE send RS(T) and State.
DX send RS(T) and Serial.
After the contest, use SDCHECK to create your .LOG file
in ARRL's Standard File Format (Cabrillo). You're free
to edit the Summary information if necessary (for example,
add soapbox comments) - but do not edit the QSO records.
A reminder that, in Cabrillo logs, dupes are not marked,
multipliers are not indicated, and QSOs are not scored.
ARRL will do all this independently with your log.
Rename your .LOG file to YOURCALL.LOG (the call used in
the contest) and email it, as an attached file, to
10meter@arrl.org.
_______________________________________________________
My suggested strategy (Mixed-Mode entries only).
CW QSOs score double points (4 compared to 2 on SSB).
Therefore, you should operate CW as much as possible, as
it's usually easier to run continuously at, for example,
120/hour on CW than 240/hour on SSB.
However, multipliers score on both modes - so use SSB as
necessary to ensure that your SSB mult total stays close
to your CW mult total. SD shows SSB and CW mult totals
separately.
I'd recommend that at least three quarters of your QSOs
should be CW - that way your average Points/QSO will be
3.5 or greater. If your average falls to 3.0, it means
you have equal numbers of CW and SSB QSOs - you may be
having fun, but you're probably not scoring as well as
you might.

Subject: [SD-User] Contesting.com Server
Message-ID:
Hi all,
We have been using the same server for the contesting.com mailing lists
for the past 6 years or more. N5KO and I paid for the original server,
and I've paid for a new motherboard and a hard drive or two when they have
failed.
But now its time to replace the entire box. I had hoped to get eHam.net
to pay for the new server, but there hasn't been enough revenue from
advertising. The plan is to purchase a used box on eBay or UBid. We
don't have big CPU/Memory requirements. We just need something with
redundant hard drives (RAID) and power supplies, and hopefully something
new enough that we can find replacement parts if something fails.
I hope some of you will have extracted enough value from these lists to
see fit to contribute something toward a new server. Your contribution
will only go to the purchase of a new contesting.com mail server. Nothing
else. We will take up $1,000 in contributions, and if the server costs
more... N5KO, AD1C, KM3T, and I will make up the difference.
You can make your contribution online at the following URL:

or you can can send a check to:

payment facilities at

To donate more than $10, simply change the quantity to more than 1. You'll
have to include a dummy State abbreviation (2 characters as in the ARRL DX
contest) and a 5-digit Zip code.

The Marconi Centenary Contest celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the
reception by Marconi, on the morning (in Canada) of 12th December 1901, of
the letter "S" in Morse code transmitted from Poldhu in Cornwall.
The contest is an integral part of the RAC Winter contest, and is confined
to Canadian and UK contesters. All contesters, however, may take part in
the RAC Winter contest. It is mixed-mode only - there are no single mode
classes.
The contest takes place from 0000 to 2359 UTC on 29th December 2001. You can
see the full rules at http://www.rac.ca/CANWIN.htm
Here's how to setup SD for the RAC Winter Contest.
Select Type 10 - General, Country & Area Multipliers.
.MLT File : CANADA
.CTY File : CANADA
Multipliers Count : B (by band)
Points per QSO : 0 (variable)
Pts/Bonus : 0 (multipliers)
Single/Multi-Op : S or M
Next Page : Y
Points per Area QSO : 10 (Canadian)
Points vary by Mode : N
by Band : N
by Location : N
Points : 2 (non-Canadian)
Receive Serial from
Area QSOs : N
Mode : CW or SSB (your starting mode)
Mixed-Mode Contest : Y

SD will automatically score Canadian RAC official stations at 20 points.
After the contest, use SDCHECK to create your .LOG and .SUM files. Complete
your .SUM file with an editor, then rename these files as YOURCALL.LOG and
YOURCALL.SUM where YOURCALL is the call used during the contest. Email
them, as attached files, to VE7CFD@rac.ca, by 31st January 2002.

you yourself have the cure. I have found that DOS drivers (CW keyers
etc) do not run well in any Windows operating system because Windows is
taking up so much of the CPU time. I have experienced this in other
Logging programs which provide a CW Keying facility. I have found the
answer is to get out of windows COMPLETELY.
This can be achieved by watching the PC screen and as soon as you see
the message 'LOADING WINDOWS 95' hit the F8 key.
You will then be offered a menu with options; select Shift/F5.
You will then be in DOS with the c:\windows prompt.
Change Directory to the root directory (where, I assume your SD is)
then load SD as you would do in a non-windows environment and your
computer generated CW should be perfect.
Hope to QSO you in VP5.

Hi All
Did the RAC test yesterday and I have a problem with SD V9.83, it wont =
let me go back into the previous qso's if I wanted, I started off the =
test and it happened staight away, I wanted to edit a call that I had =
put in and as soon as I went past a canadian stn with a province, say ON =
the next non candadian stn be it EU or US then SD would not let it go =
past without a State being put in no matter which key I pressed until I =
put in a canadian province then it just stuck there bleeping with evey =
key I used. So I thought might have been somthing I did in setting it up =
b4 starting so I came off the air manually wrote down the 20 or so qso's =
that I had done, deleted the RAC.ALL file and then re-started the prog =
(always in Dos BTW) and made a new test called RAC. I put back in the =
calls I had then went live agn, now seeing that I did not want to find =
SD doing this again I made sure that every call was 100% b4 entering. I =
made over 710 qso's CW & SSB and at the end of the test tried to go into =
the log and the same thing happend it wanted a state for a non VE stn.
The strange thing is as I played abt with it after the test it only does =
that ONCE u go past a VE stn with a province code eg ON or NB or any of =
the other valid ones, and then every non VE stn has to have a province =
code????
The problem is the is a couple of calls I want to check and I cant get =
back in from the logging prog, I can thru SDcheck but not SD which I =
need to as it may alter the score
Happy New Year to u and urs

Hi All
Did the RAC test =
yesterday and I have=20
a problem with SD V9.83, it wont let me go back into the previous qso's =
if I=20
wanted, I started off the test and it happened staight away, I wanted to =
edit a=20
call that I had put in and as soon as I went past a canadian stn with a=20
province, say ON the next non candadian stn be it EU or US then SD would =
not let=20
it go past without a State being put in no matter which key I pressed =
until I=20
put in a canadian province then it just stuck there bleeping with evey =
key I=20
used. So I thought might have been somthing I did in setting it up b4 =
starting=20
so I came off the air manually wrote down the 20 or so qso's that I had =
done,=20
deleted the RAC.ALL file and then re-started the prog (always in Dos =
BTW) and=20
made a new test called RAC. I put back in the calls I had then went live =
agn,=20
now seeing that I did not want to find SD doing this again I made sure =
that=20
every call was 100% b4 entering. I made over 710 qso's CW & SSB and =
at the=20
end of the test tried to go into the log and the same thing happend it =
wanted a=20
state for a non VE stn.
The strange thing is as =
I played abt=20
with it after the test it only does that ONCE u go past a VE stn with a =
province=20
code eg ON or NB or any of the other valid ones, and then every non VE =
stn has=20
to have a province code????
The problem is the is a =
couple of=20
calls I want to check and I cant get back in from the logging prog, I =
can thru=20
SDcheck but not SD which I need to as it may alter the =
score
Happy New Year to u and =

Hi John,
I know its too late now but NEVER DELETE A .ALL FILE. Always save it to =
a floppy. you never know when you might need it again.
I found exactly the same problem as you. When I wanted to scroll up the =
file it stopped on a non-Canadian QSO and the software locked up right =
there. So like you, I never scrolled up again. =20
Now your problem. =20
1... Copy your RAC.ALL to a floppy and put it away for now. =20
2... run RAC in SD and take a note of the score panel for future =
reference to check later that your changes have worked.
3... End SD=20
4... in DOS, open the RAC.ALL file using EDIT.
( C:\SD>edit rac.all)
Now be very very careful. Press the 'Insert' key so that you are in =
OVERWRITE mode.
go down the file and carefully change whatever it is you want to change. =
=20
5... When you have finished, bring the cursor to the END of the last =
line in the log. (Not the beginning of the first blank line)
6... Alt F1 S to save the file.
7... run RAC in SD again and check the score panel. =20
If you have made a mess of it, remember - you saved the file on the =
floppy.
(NB: If nothing happens at C:\>edit rac.all. It is probably because =
you don't have a path to where EDIT.COM resides. It resides in your DOS =
directory - lets say its called C:\DOS. Change directory to C:\DOS. =
then "c:\dos EDIT C:\SD\RAC.ALL")

Hi All,
Had the same problem as John and Sid,
having made a note of the qso no. I went straight
to it by putting the qso no. on the entry line,
but having made the correction, SD wanted said
Province code, I got round it by pressing
minus...thus abandoning the edit. Later, taking a
break, I closed SD, made back-up .ALL, then edited
in DOS editor, guess Paul has some work for next
issue !!

Hi
I also use v9.83 but I had no problems though out the contest. I use an =
FT1000MP and it all worked perfectly. I was able to amend details of =
earlier QSOs with no problems. The only thing that may have an =
influence on this is that I noted in the Canada.MLT file there is only =
12 provinces (NT is missing). So I made a new one up prior to starting =
which I called RAC.MLT and added "NT =3D Nunavut".
I have to say that the only reason that I did this was that I had not =
seen any info on the SD Set up for the Contest. (hence my earlier msg re =
having lost contact with SD Users!) and had a look at the content of the =
Canada.cty and Canada.mtl files!
Despite having flu and feeling like a used and discarded disk washing =
rag. I set myself a target of 100 QSOs and stopped as soon as I made =
it!!

Thanks to all who reported this problem.
John G4RCG, and others, described the following.
> I wanted to edit a call that I had put in and as soon
> as I went past a canadian stn with a province, say ON
> the next non candadian stn be it EU or US then SD would
> not let it go past without a State being put
Firtly, SD offers 2 separate ways of editing any earlier QSO. As described
under "Editing Logged QSOs" in the Command Summary - "Use Up/Down (scroll)
keys or enter QSO number".
In the circumstances described, the Up/Down keys did not work, but I've
checked that entering the QSO number does work.
At this stage, the best option is to note the qso numbers (the Serial Sent)
for all QSOs you know you have to edit. Reload SD, enter each QSO number
and edit the QSO. SD will re-score, and check dupes and multipliers after
each edit. Alternatively, you could use the edit option in SDCHECK (Option
1) to make any necesary corrections - this option is not so good, becasue no
re-scoring or dupe checking takes place. I know some of you use EDIT or
NOTEPAD, but it's safer to edit with SDCHECK because it won't let you change
the length of any of your QSO records. In either case, you can then re-load
SD and see your score, or generate your Summary Sheet file with SDCHECK.
I've now corrected the problem in SD, and the fix will be included in V9.84
for release on 1st January.
Here's the explanation of what happened, for those of you who are
interested. When editing a QSO in a Type 10 contest, SD tests the callsign
(by reference to the .CTY file) to see if it's an Area QSO or not - because
Area QSOs must have a valid area code, and other QSOs should not have an
area code. The .MLT file (in this case CANADA.MLT) lists country prefixes
(in the .CTY file) which will require an area code (in this case VE only).
Now what's different about the RAC contest, or in the way that SD is setup
to score it, is that the .CTY file, CANADA.CTY, has only 1 country record
(VE itself) as there are no country multipliers. SD did not find a matching
country for any non-Canadian callsigns, and
it did nothing - whereas it should have defined the QSO as a non-Area QSO.
When you scroll past a Canadian callsign an internal AREAQSO indicator is
set, but it was not unset for the next non-Canadian callsign (because of no
matching country in the .CTY file), so SD insisted on getting an area code
before moving on.
Again, this bug in SD is/was probably unique to the RAC contest. In any
case, it's another loophole closed for good.
73,
Paul EI5DI
