I bought the computer I am using now about 3 years ago new. So far I have added a zip drive, added additional RAM, upgraded to a new video card, upgraded to a new modem card and upgraded to Windows 98 with no problems. As a matter of fact it runs a lot better now than it did when I first got it. Windows 98 was a big improvement over Windows 95. I am thinking about a second hard disk since the 10 GB that is in it is starting to get full. Should be no problem since there is a shelf and power/data connectors for a 2nd HD sitting in the box waiting. So far I have used off the shelf stuff I bought mostly at CompUSA or hamfests. Anyway, I don't know about the other "big name brand" computers but I have found Dell to be easily upgradable with nonDell components. The 1999-2000 season was the best ever for the ARRL, as we processed a record number of entries - nearly 18,000 from our various contests. It's a good time to restate some important changes for submitting entries for ARRL Contests. As of this past Wednesday November 1, 2000, all electronically logged entries to ARRL Contests must be submitted to the ARRL Contest Branch in the Cabrillo file format. A paper printout of the file is not an acceptable substitute. The latest versions of the commercial logging programs all will output the Cabrillo format file. A complete Cabrillo file will include a header with the complete summary sheet information; and the log file, with the QSO data in the specified columns. The complete Cabrillo specifications are found in the November 1999 issue of QST or may be found at www.kkn.net/~trey/cabrillo/. If you are running an older version of your logging program, you may want to contact them to get the most up-to-date version. Remember the new West Central Florida (WCF) section was added to the ARRL Field Organization in January 2000. A total of 80 sections are required to make the "Clean Sweep" in the November Sweepstakes. A common question asked is "how do I mark dupes in the log file?" The simple answer is "You don't." The log checking process does not rely on the claimed score from your log. After processing your log, it calculates your remaining valid QSOs and Multipliers to determine your final score. All of the major commercial logging software packages already count any dupes in your log as zero point QSOs, so the log checking software does not penalize you for "unmarked dupes." Handwritten paper log penalties remain the same. Another common question is "How do I mark off-time?" Again, the simple answer is "You don't." The log checking software will search your Cabrillo log file and calculate off-times. Do not add off times into the Soapbox Section and do not edit them into your Cabrillo log data. If we find a log with which we have a question regarding off times, we will contact the participant. Before you submit your Cabrillo log file entry, please verify that the summary sheet header section of the file includes all of the required information. Do not assume that your software automatically includes everything you need in the header. Over the past few weeks, I have been looking at the output files of the various programs and find some problems. For example, one of the commercial software packages allows you to select "Single Op Assisted" for the ARRL Ten Meter Contest, but there is no such category in the rules. Another example is submitting as "Single Op Unlimited" or "Single Band Assisted" in the ARRL International DX Contest. Those are not valid entry categories for those contests. Multioperator stations may need to edit in the additional operator callsigns to the file. Please verify the information in the Cabrillo Header is correct before you submit the file to us. You only have to submit one file: the Cabrillo log file. Please make certain that it is properly named before sending it to us. Name it (such as N1ND.txt). Improperly named files are more easily overwritten or lost. Imagine the problems we would have with a hundred files named "SSCW2000.txt.) Do not send .bin or .qdf files. The Cabrillo format log file must be in ASCII format. Excel spreadsheets, Word or WordPerfect documents, or other such program files are not usable and may cause your entry to be classified as a checklog. And remember there is a unique e-mail address for each contest (found in each contest rules announcement in QST.) If you have any questions in regards to the ARRL Contest program or need information on log submissions, please contact me at n1nd@arrl.org or by phone at 860-594-0232. Used it mainly to S&P two bands at once. S&P while CQing did not come naturally, but I wasn't getting much action from my CQs anyway! With identical radios, I often used #2 as the "main" radio, e.g. all 80M and most 15M was on #2. Did not feel loud at any time -- although I worked most guys easily on one call with very few repeats, I could not get results from CQs. Had only one decent run Sunday afternoon on 20M. Highlights were getting VO1MP and VY1JA through monstrous pileups on 10M. VY1JA took a while (20 minutes). I monitored VO1MP on the 2nd radio, occasionally jumping into the pile -- got him quickly after he went split. Got multiple QSOs with all the other "rare" sections. SFL was as rare as any section since many big guns are now in WCF. (2) ICOM 765 X9 at 65 ft. 40 rot. dipole at 75 ft. 80M delta loop 40-20-15 wire dipole at 35 ft. Seems like every year I get real frustrated with this contest, maybe because I keep thinking one year I'll get it right and be happy with the results.  I missed my goal of 1,000 QSOs because of two problems right out of the gate.  First, about 45 minutes into the contest something went haywire with my keying and I had to switch things around which meant that I would have only one radio for the weekend rather than two.  This is not a big deal because I've never made more than a dozen second radio QSOs in my life, but I was looking forward to trying it on Sunday afternoon.  Then, in the S&P mode the program/computer completely locked up.  This first showed up when I was trying to work W4WA.  Sorry Ron/Lee!  I loaded an earlier version of the program and everything was fine from there on out.  The most bothersome result of the two events was the time out of action Saturday afternoon.  I knew Sunday afternoon would be terrible, so those QSOs you miss on Saturday really hurt the bottom line.

The greatest improvement to my shack for the coming season(s) is a Top Ten band decoder and antenna switch box.  It's one of those things that you really don't appreciate until you have one.  I didn't realize how much bother it was in the past to switch antennas when I changed bands.  It is so very nice to just punch the button on the rig and have the right antenna on line and ready to go.

It seemed like most of the contest I needed Wyoming and Maritime.  Never did get Maritime. BUMMER.  I finally got WY a couple of hours before QRT.  I guess one of the biggest thrills this year was having VY1JA answer my 40M CQ on Saturday night.  That got my adrenalin going.  You can see from the rate sheet that 40M is a good band for me.  If I had it to do over again I would stay on the air through the entire night and maybe take a nap on Sunday afternoon.  Maybe next year.

I had five sections with only one QSO each: NWT, PR, AK, ND and WY.  Seems like there were a good number of GA stations.  I worked 12, which is more than most years.  I haven't taken time yet to see if all are SECC folk.  I know many are.  Top section for me was IL with 45.

Here are the summary and rate sheets:

Don't have my log, so I'll rely on my rapidly fading memory... 1. Conditions were really good, and a few guys remarked that my QRP signal was really strong -- but I had lousy results from CQing. My theory is that everything is relative. Casual ops can't hear weak signals (a fact proven annually at Field Day), and S9+10 must be "weak" compared to a pinned S-meter. 2. One and only one good run: Sunday evening on 14003. Wierd to have your best hour late in the 'test. 3. Activity was good! I worked at least two of EVERY multiplier except NL and YT. Yes, Jay, I worked both a VE1 and a VE9 in MAR. 4. 40 was a pain! Even the big guns were way up in the band -- all the way to 7090! Kept getting shoved out after only a few CQs. 5. I used a delta loop on 80 versus verticals in the past. I did "feel" louder on this band, especially into the Northeast, but the band was quiet and it might have been conditions. Also had a low 40-20-15 dipole at 35 ft., broadside NW/SE. On 40, it was rarely better than the rotatable dipole at 75 ft., but good on 15 & 20. 6. Two radios is nice to have, but will take practice. I have been woefully short of contest practice lately. 7. Good News/Bad News -- I think I got about all I could from a tribander/single element station. 73, Gary K9AY -- SECC on the Web: http://secc.contesting.com/ Submissions: secc@contesting.com Administrative requests: secc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-secc@contesting.com From w4nti@mindspring.com Tue Nov 7 00:14:42 2000 From: w4nti@mindspring.com (w4nti@mindspring.com) Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2000 18:14:42 -0600 Subject: [SECC] References: <000e01c04833$4710f700$6791aec7@com> <000e01c0483c$7c1a2620$0f0210ac@gary> Message-ID: <000f01c0484f$bb88e0e0$1093aec7@com> This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_000C_01C0481D.6F3A0A20 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Well yes and no.....What I did (on the MP) was set the dots to 12 and = the dash to 37. The old Alabama LP state record was 129K and the goal was to break the record. I was able to do that. The second goal was 1000 Q's and I did not make that. Conditions were great. The QRP guys were LOUD. Best hour was 75 in the first hour while watching the Alabama vs LSU ball game (should have been watching the rate meter more...If I am named the next football coach at Alabama, my station will be available for guest ops during all fall contests) 80 was noisy from here Sat night. Seemed like atmospheric noise not power line noise but will put that on the list of things to check. Other have commented that 80 was quiet. 80 is usually the big money band but things were going so good on 20 and 40, I never really made it there for any lenght of time. When I was there, I had worked most of the guys CQ'ing and I couldn't get anything going when I CQ'ed. 40 was a blast. I had a good run (60 hours) while I was at 7055 Sat night. At one point, I was within 12 Q's of N4ZZ 6 hours into the contest and was beating NP2B by 20 Q's 20..what others were able to do on 40, I was able to do on 20. ( I saw several LP stations in the south with 600+ Q's on 40) 469 Q's is a big number for me. Started the contest on 20 and stayed there for a while. 15/10 mainly worked guys out west S and P. 15 was open to the NE but no real rate available. I was able to CQ and work some guys out west on 10/15 that I would not have worked on other bands but the words of K4AB were in the back of my mind everytime I didn't get an answer to a CQ ..if I'm on 15 meters, I'm loosing. Worked N0AH in WY with about 20 minutes to go for the sweep. I was S and P'ing on 20 and found him. Last two mults were VO1 and WY. Broke a huge pile up to VO1MP on 15 meters for the mult. Saw where Gus only had 35q's on 15 so I feel lucky. Never heard him on 10. Rates were S L O W sunday afternoon. I think I had several hours of 20 to 25 Q's. Conditions were so good that folks were spread out over 3/4 bands. Too many guys just started CQ'ing on top of me without a QRL or ? The guys who really make this contest are the guys with less than 200 Q's. I can't tell you how cool it is to be pushing hard (as hard as one can with one radio) in the last hours trying to break a goal and get called by a guy who gives you QSO number 22 and he has a check of 39. My best hour was the 1st, but the 2nd best hour was 2100Z Sunday! That's when I was able to run on 14010 for nearly an hour. The vast majority of stations worked when running (even short runs) were "A" or "Q" precendence with QSO numbers well below my own -- Even QRP stations gotta be able to run to work the more casual ops! 73, Gary K9AY -- SECC on the Web: http://secc.contesting.com/ Submissions: secc@contesting.com Administrative requests: secc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-secc@contesting.com From w4nti@mindspring.com Fri Nov 10 17:59:40 2000 From: w4nti@mindspring.com (w4nti@mindspring.com) Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 11:59:40 -0600 Subject: [SECC] Most interesting SS CW QSO... He was using a Ranger and a Super Pro. In 1960, I would have been using a Super Pro SP400X and a HT18 driving a home brew (not by me) pair of 100THs at a full 1 KW input. My first SS was 1955. I worked CW for 40 hours and then worked a bit of AM Phone at the end of the contest. Actually, that was for years after 1955. I now remember that I planned to enter Phone and worked it for a number of hours, maybe even for a weekend, but I got tired of that mode (AM phone was rough!) and finished the contest on CW. For all future years when the contests were both modes at the same time for two weekends, I worked the maximum time on CW and then played around on Phone at bit at the end. Thanks for the memories, Leigh. 73, John. P.S. The exchange was a lot different then. I think it was QSO #, R (for precedence Routine) your call, check signal report?, ARRL Section for place of origin, time, and the current date. At some later time, the time was deleted and the date was changed to your birth date. That was the way a lot of people learned of contesters' birthdays and sent them radiograms. Until recent years, I always got one that originated that way from Dick Regent, K9GDF in Wisconsin. At one time, Dick also used an HT18 Hallicrafters exciter, 6AG7 driving 6L6. Supposed to have output on all five amateur bands 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10, but mine never had any output on 10. 73, John. -- SECC on the Web: http://secc.contesting.com/ Submissions: secc@contesting.com Administrative requests: secc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-secc@contesting.com From k4bai@worldnet.att.net Sat Nov 11 04:02:30 2000 From: k4bai@worldnet.att.net (John T. My log shows NFL for W9IOP. I didn't realize I was really working W3TMZ. There was a time when Jack was one of the top SS and CD Party operators in the country. I guess the choice of a club call indicates that he was an admirer (and maybe friend) of Larry. Incidentally, he had quite a pile up on 20 CW Sunday AM (QSO at 1319Z). I called him about ten times on the seond rig before he answered me. Of course, he was answering stations on skip to him and I was getting him on ground wave, backscatter, or some other non-standard prop. Of course, he also gave me #125, so it's understandable that a lot of guys would line up for a big signal who hadn't already worked a lot of Qs. Maybe not the lure of the call, which a lot of people didn't know or wouldn't remember. I now have had a chance to look at the SS log to answer K4OGG's question. During the last hour of operation (ending at 0232Z), the lowest number I got was 8 A N4PSE 62 SFL. N4PSE is a call that I have worked many times, particularly nearly every year when I go to Barbados. Other interesting contacts in the last hour were: 0223Z, 21 B W5KL 30 AR. Leland used to be W4AGI and W4YE (both calls now belong to his sons). He was a Brigadier General in the Marine Corps and was stationed in Atlanta for years when his primary call was W4YE. He held both calls then (W4AGI was his original call from 1930). He is now president of OOTC. I recall one year when there was still a power multiplier that I worked SS with high power and got beat by W4YE with low power and a power multiplier. I think it was 1.5 on phone and 1.25 on cw. In any case, I never again used high power until the power multiplier was done away with . Leland is also a former SCM (now SM) of ARRL. I don't remember what section it was....maybe VA. He was recently president of QCWA also. 0231Z 24 A W2GD 61 NNJ. John Crovelli, famous ham (operates at P40W). Running on 80 CW at the last minute. Divorced in recent years and may not have an all band station at home. Probably often operates as a guest from other's stations with his own call. Last QSO, 0232Z 10 B W0EOZ 30 ND. Called me on 40 CW. One of the rarest sections and a 70-year ham I assume without checking the FCC data base. 73, John, K4BAI. Oh yes, down to Barbados Nov 21 and return Nov 28. Will be QRV 160 through 6 M CW and SSB. Glad to sked anyone for needed bands/modes especially since this is my last trip there. 8P9HT outside the contest and 8P9Z during the test. -- SECC on the Web: http://secc.contesting.com/ Submissions: secc@contesting.com Administrative requests: secc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-secc@contesting.com From k4sb@mindspring.com Sat Nov 11 04:44:01 2000 From: k4sb@mindspring.com (Ed Sleight) Date: Sat, 11 Nov 2000 04:44:01 +0000 Subject: [SECC] Most interesting SS CW QSO... I did work some CW traffic nets 4RN and RN5) but found that I was too slow on CW. In 1958 I had to throw a toggle switch which was painful on either CW or AM phone. Shelton Morgan W5DQK had won the Mississippi section the past two years while placing in the top 3 or 5 scores. In those days the SS was 40 hours out of 73 over two weekends and as John (K4BAI) mentioned you had to pick CW or Phone. The real trick was to pick the right 40 hours. Being a newcomer I worked 19 hours the first weekend and ended up with 400 QSO's after dups. W5DQK worked 24 hours and had 520 QSO's (most stations worked 22 to 25 hours the first weekend as the second weekend was usually slower). I did not know any better so I jumped in and worked fast and furious the second weekend and finished up with 921 Q's to 777 for W5DQK. Place third on Phone. I found that the W6 contenders would jump out fast the first few hours while in W5 we would creep along and pass the 6's by late the second weekend. But we had to careful as they could finish with a strong last few hours. In 1962 K6EVR and I dueled to the end and he finished with a strong last hour (of 40( to beat me by 13 QSOs. I turned the tables on him the next year. In those days the winners had to run 150 watts input or less. There was a multiplier of 1.5 on Phone and 1.25 on CW (for QSO points). All of the section winners were listed with the gear they used. I sure miss that. I used to borrow a pair of 4-125A's from W5GRP (he finally gave me one) and I replaced the 4-400A with a 4-125 in the final and carefully set the auto transformer so that I did only hit 150 watts on peaks (I think we set the final voltage to 1400V from 3000 and I ran 100ma on the big Triplett meter. I had the club secretary certify that I ran 150 watts or less at all times. I heard rumors that several of the contestants ran higher power and still claimed 150 watts. The ARRL Division director visited me in 1959 to make a further check. That year several of the high scorers failed to turn in logs on both modes. Guess ARRL was concerned...This was the same year that FCC checked several prominent stations during the CQ WW and eliminated a whole layer for overpower (of 1 Kw input). But as John mentioned the exchange was a bear in those days. You had to log both signal reports, sections, QSO number, power level, check, both dates/times....A logging program would have run out of room! ARRL intended for the exchange to be a message preamble as most contesters (and SS entrants) were traffic handlers. They cut the exchange down in 1963 and using mostly SSB (with VOX) I showed that 1000 QSO's in 24 hours was possible. Until then Phone played second fiddle to CW...as John said AM was a chore!!!! I did get on with my Yaesu barefoot several years ago and work 102 stations in one hours just to stay sharp. I do remember the Georgia phone winner during that time was W4FGH (Augusta or Savannah) and he worked only 40 meters. I have QSLs from K4BAI, K4TEA, W4BFR, W4MCM (W4HR now), and W4YWX (now N4PN) from those early (for me) years. I remember several gave me checks before 1920. W9NN is the only one left from that crowd. W9IOP was early to mid 30's as was W4KFC. 73 Dave K4JRB (retired from the SS after 1963) -- SECC on the Web: http://secc.contesting.com/ Submissions: secc@contesting.com Administrative requests: secc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-secc@contesting.com From k4bai@worldnet.att.net Sat Nov 11 23:52:17 2000 From: k4bai@worldnet.att.net (John T. I thought some of you might be interested in it, but got discouraged when the analysis showed 25 hours (almost) instead of 24. Oh well, I've done it, so here it is. Hour QSOs 2nd radio Qs Mults 2nd radio Mult Run Bands S&P Bd 21Z 83 5 43 5 20 10 First second radio QSO at 2116Z was KH6ND/KH5. Loud signal. Worked (I hope) W1NRG. He called me three times later. K0DI/KP2 had a rough/chirpy signal. W8PIG almost threw me with my first check "00." 22Z 75 8 17 5 20 10 Worked VY1JA on ten at 2206Z. At 2259Z thought I worked my college roommate K4QPL. Turns out from a later QSO that he was actually working WO4O. I knew that Ric had moved in on my frequency and it must have seemed clear to him as I could hear him only weakly. 23Z 89 18 5 2 20 15 K6SB was another check "00." 00Z 77 17 3 0 20 15 VO1GO called me. AA6PW has a chirpy signal with parasitics near his frequency. I have heard this rig before. 01Z 68 18 3 0 20/40 15/20 Worked only 1x1 call W1M in Maine. VE9FX called on 40. 02Z 82 13 3 1 40 20 K4IX/3 in Delaware was a multi op expedition for the contest by K4IX and KT4P. Unfortunately their signal on 20 is very rough. K5KG called from WCF for my first ever QSO with that new section. 03Z 80 3 3 1 40/20 20/80 KL7J called for first AK on 20. W1AW also called on 20. Their speed was OK with me. 04Z 78 1 20/40 20 KG6DFM also check 00. KL7Y called in. 05Z 69 11 40 20/80 VE1GN called in on 40. 06Z 73 13 40/80 80 KH8/N5OLS called on 40. K4QPL calls and says no QSO before, hi. Operated some of the first four hours, then part of Sunday afternoon. Never managed to operate when 80m was open. Missed RI, DE, AL, NV, SD, NL, and NWT. I did hear VY1JA on 10m Sunday, but it almost sounded like he was working from a list. Bands sounded really funny, especially Sunday. 20m was exceptionally short, although 10m was rather weak. 20m turned out to the the money band for this low-power station. With all the big guns spread out on 10-15-20, I managed to find a spot on 20m early in the contest and get a nice run. Found spots on 20m later for a couple more nice runs. In a few years when the sunspots go away, all the big guns will be crowded in 20m, so better to enjoy it now. One thing I've learned about doing SS with low power is not to waste too much time calling backscatter stations. Even so, worked SC, TN, NFL, WCF all backscatter on 20m. My only GA station was W4AN, worked backscatter on 15m. Had a couple of odd incidents on 15m. Tried to work on CA station who told me that he "had S9 line noise and couldn't hear the weak ones." My thought was -- what the heck is he doing calling CQ if he can't hear? Well, I suppose I need to work on my antennas to avoid being so weak.... Wow! Ben! Great job! Too bad on the sweep. But you should be proud of that score. Low power and extremely modest antennas means you have to make up for everything in operator skill. Conditions generally seemed pretty good, but better for the west, northwest, and maybe Florida. K4XS had a tremendous score from WCF and I heard several stations sending numbers over 2000 toward the end. My goal this weekend was to get the FT1000MP set back up (it has been on the floor in the dining room since CQWW SSB, except for a car trip to W4AN to have as a spare, and to avoid wearing myself out before the trip to Barbados, which starts from here at 4:30 AM tomorrow. I had used the FT1000MP only sparingly on SSB except for ARRL DX and CQ WW SSB from NQ4I where we can't use VOX because of 6 stations in the same room and use a footswitch, so I had never used it on VOX. After about an hour I got out the manual and figured out how to shorten the VOX delay and the rest of the contest was much more enjoyable. I had used the 2000 khz. filter only a little from home, but it was a real lifesaver on the band from 20 and below. I didn't need it very much (the standard filter is 2400 khz) on 10 and 15 since the stations were spaced out more. After a while the 2000 khz filter's skirts sounded normal to me on 20 and below and I never considered changing it to the wider filter. I prefer to CQ in this contest, giving me a chance to work the casual operators who may appreciate a QSO and a QSL if they request one. S&P can be fun early before you work so many of the big guns, but is a bore later on in the contest. There is still the thrill of finding a new one late in the contest that way though. Without a second radio and without a voice keyer, the CQing gets tiring. I definitely need to buy a voice keyer if I am going to continue to do voice contests. I used to go 48 hours and get only slightly hoarse, but the years have taken a toll on the vocal chords. I did use the second receiver in the FT1000MP to search a bit when the answers were slow to CQs. I didn't count the number of QSOs made by S&P on the second VFO, but it must have been no more than 20 or 25. Probably it would have been more if I hadn't worked all sections fairly early. The station setup: FT1000MP with all factory filters, no mods. AL811H, probably about 700 watts output. TH6DXX (probably 30 years old) at about 45 feet. 40 meter 1/2 wave dipole at about 20 feet. 80 meter inverted vee with the apex about 5 feet below the TH6. It was cut for the CW band. Usually I fold back the ends for a SSB contest, but I neglected to do that this time until it was raining. I have to go onto the roof to do it and it was pretty slippery on Saturday. So I left it cut for CW. I ran it straight into the antenna without an antenna tuner as the old MFJ I have has developed some intermittents in it. Actually, at the first of the contest I had no antenna for 80. I made two contacts on 80 on Saturday night (Ill and Tenn) with no antenna at all except for several feet of coax connected to an antenna switch. In the middle of the night when I got back up, having waked up about 4 AM worried about not having worked GA, AL, NFL, and maybe a few others in close, I got up and realized that the lack of noise on the band was trying to tell me something. The coax was broken inside the coax connector and I had to unsolder and resolder it. After that, the antenna worked really well as I was able to work several California stations, even by calling CQ. However, the activity on the band (at least in the General class section) was very low in those early morning hours. I did get all those close in sections though. Family and church obligations cooperated to keep me from wearing myself out with operating. I actually operated about 18 hours. I heard the group at W4AN only once, on 20 meters. They had a big pile up of stations much stronger than I was at their QTH, so I gave only a few calls and moved on. I hope they had a great time at Bill's station. Here are the results: I had hoped for 1000 QSOs and just couldn't find that last QSO to make it an even 1000. No doubt I will lose some in the checking process. By the way, at least in CT and NA, some KG6 stations still have a default of Pacific and all KG4 stations have a default of VI. So you need to be very careful about entering those calls. The only change to my log I made after the contest was to change VI to VA for KG4DVC. I tried to make the change during the contest and thought I had, but it was still VI when I reviewed the log. I think the next changes for CT and NA will change those. At least the KG6 calls will all be changed to US in changes that AD1C will make available before CQWW CW. I'm not sure that the KG4 changes can be so easily made. I guess it needs to recognize two letter KG4s as VI and three letter KG4s as USA. Obviously the solution for SS is to simply delete the default entry, but it may be harder to do for the country.DAT files for CQWW. At any rate, be sure to check your entries in CQWW logging software for KG6 and KG4 this weekend. If the software thinks that they are DX stations, you claimed score will be inflated. Of course, the Cabrillo log checking software will score them correctly with no penalty. 80 67 40 115 20 619 15 120 10 78 ALL 999 x 80 = 159,840. 21Z Sat Started CQing on 20. Had a good frequency about 14240. Fair rates, but not much faster than on CW at W4AN. I think most of the guys who might have otherwise called were S&P the big signals from the west on 10 and 20. QSO #15 was when I was called by VA2GL giving me a mult that apparently was hard for a lot of guys. I later was called by VE2AWR and VE2DO. The only VE2 I heard calling CQ was our neighbor from Tenn as VE2/K4BEV, but he gave me a very low number. QSO # 121 was called by VO1MP. Again turned out to be a rare mult. 2302Z, was called on 10 NH7/N6HC for the Pacific mult. Later was called by AH7C and worked KH7R, who will have one of the real high scores. N6HC hopes to work CQWW CW next weekend from KH6BZF's station. Took off one hour plus for supper with Weesie and visit to my parents. Back on 20 about 01Z, worked W1AW. I think it is good that the HQ station is activated for ARRL-sponsored contests and that isn't always the case. When I first spotted W1AW, it was working WA4CNG, Steve Reynolds, who was first licensed in Columbus years ago and is now active again on HF from the Atlanta area. 20 stayed short longer on Sat than it did on Sun. At 02Z, we still had skip to VA, but the band went long just after that time. At 0220Z, 15 was still open weakly to the west coast and I picked up KL7Y as a mult and VE7IN. KL7FAP was also very active, but there didn't seem to be the usual number of AK stations active for this SSB contest. About 03Z, I went to 40 and worked a number of close in mults, including SC, but it was very difficult to find and hold a CQ frequency with a poor antenna. At 04Z, I worked KI9A and K4FUN with a few feet of coax as an antenna on 75 and went to bed. At 09Z, after repairing the 75-meter coax, I began to S&P and CQ alternatively on 75. There was no problem finding a quiet frequency, but the problem was that most everyone had gone to bed. I did work AL (thanks Bridget), GA, and, at last about 1145Z, NFL. In between, I had worked some 40, but it was pretty sparsely populated also. After 1145Z, I was able to run some on 40 before the ragchewers got up and the band went pretty short. 13Z I tried 20 M and it was great for 20 minutes until I had to QRT. Then there was a trip to my parent's house to see to their breakfast, Sunday School, and church, and return at 1725Z. Rates of answers to CQs were greater Sunday afternoon up until 00Z than they had been on Saturday. Rates after I returned to the air Sunday night about 01Z were pretty slow because 20 was so long and so many had met their goals and gone QRT. 15 and 10 had some shorter skip up East and 10 had a lot of backscatter signals, some of which were loud and easy to work. The close in ones (GA, AL, TN) had loud echoes on them. 1900Z found VE1OP for mult #79. 2145Z, VE9STU called me for the second MAR. 2218, found mult #80 from VY1JA on 10M. 0004Z, VO1HE called me. I never heard a NL station calling CQ, but have read reports of huge pileups. 0010 to 0110Z QRT for supper and visit to drug store for parents and short visit with them. Glad they live only about 6 blocks away. 0115Z found KH6/F5IDM on 15M. 02Z QSO #970. I think I can reach 1000. 0230Z, QSO #975, I think there is no chance to reach 1000! 0257Z, QSO #999 with N7NS after a surprising run of calls from weak west coast and Texas stations. But, in the ensuing three minutes, no one called and the final was one short of the goal. Thanks to the following SECC members for QSOs: KV4T (KS4YT, opr), NJ8J, KT4ZB, W4NTI, K4SB, K4WI, W4WA. Ron was 150 ahead of me on Sunday afternoon and he was running low power. I imagine the low power winner for GA may beat the high power winner this year. Also heard: W4OC, W4AQL (Ga Tech), W4AN. Other Ga stations worked: KT4Q, K4KJ, N4VMD. Signals were of good quality generally. W8UE had distorted audio, but it was still readable. I felt signal quality on SSB exeeded that on CW generally. It was good to hear old calls being used by new owners, such as W1TS and W1TX. I am disappointed that some of the offspring and other friends of some of the revered old timers like W4KFC don't activate their calls more. Finally a word about the Barbados trip. I should arrive in Barbados about 5 PM tomorrow (Tuesday). I may be QRV as 8P9HT as early as 00Z Wed. I will check in to the Ga State Net (GSN) on 3593 at 7 and 10 PM on non-contest days. Will be glad to move off net frequency with anyone who asks for a QSO. I have an e-mail address there, but don't it with me at the office. I'll put out a note on the reflector with the address tonight if anyone wants to send me a message. I'll be glad to sked anyone for a new band or mode. I should be QRV on CW and SSB from 160 through 6 meters outside the contest. I will run a SSB sked to find people from back home on 21375 at 14Z (9 AM EST) on Wed, Thurs, Fri, Mon, and Tuesday. I will need to QRT about 15Z on Tuesday, Nov 28 to return home. This will probably be my last trip there since the station is scheduled for taking down in May 2001. So, if you hear me from Barbados, please call in. During the contest next weekend, I will use 8P9Z again. I am undecided about whether to make it all bands or maybe a single band 10 meter effort. I really love all bands, but it is physically exhausting. The low band antennas are not what they were in the past as the 40-meter beam is not working. I have been unable to make my laptop computer key the IC736 that I have from either NA or CT using either the COM1 or LPT1 ports. I can only figure that the interfaces have both gone bad since I last used them. I haven't used them since I got the FT1000MP because it requires a stereo plug. Actually I tried it with a stereo plug and it didn't work, but maybe it was the interfaces all along. It is too late now to get another one, so it seems that I will not be able to key the rig from the computer. In that case, I will use the computer only for logging and will be sending with my MFJ Grandmaster memory keyer. If you notice that 8P9Z can't send CW (especially can't send it very fast)--I mean if I am not accurate in sending callsigns toward the end of the contest, you will know what the problem is. The last time I used a keyer for this contest and didn't have the computer keying was 1992. But, it was fun then, so it will fun now, just a little less so from the pleasure of having used the computer keying in the intervening years. Pray for me a safe and relatively sane trip. My XYL won't make the trip anymore, the local host (8P^PW) has moved away, and I will be all by myself down there for a week, hi. 73, John, K4BAI/8P9HT. -- SECC on the Web: http://secc.contesting.com/ Submissions: secc@contesting.com Administrative requests: secc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-secc@contesting.com From AB4RU@aol.com Tue Nov 21 00:45:53 2000 From: AB4RU@aol.com (AB4RU@aol.com) Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2000 19:45:53 EST Subject: [SECC] W4WA SS Results Message-ID: <84.d80ffb5.274b1fc1@aol.com> Callsign Used : W4WA Operator : W4WA Hours : 21.5 Category : SO/LP Default Exchange : # A W4WA 69 GA Name : Ron Hooper Address : 2953 Hy 51, Lula Georgia 30554 City/State/Zip : 30554 Country : United States Team/Club : South East Contest Club BAND Raw QSOs Valid QSOs Points Mults __________________________________________________ 80SSB 346 346 690 9 40SSB 32 32 64 2 20SSB 514 514 1018 20 15SSB 167 167 334 15 10SSB 104 104 208 34 __________________________________________________ Totals 1163 1163 2314 80 Final Score = 185120 points. Hi SECC'ers: Great working many of you on the bands this past weekend. This contest started out as a get on, work a few folks, then go do something else contest. I been planning to build a new beverage switch box that is microprocessor controlled for several years now. I almost got it finished and discovered that the programming software was at work. I ran out time to complete the project before the contest started, so I was "beverage switchless." I did manage to plug one beverage into the antenna port on the FT1000 and use the switch on the rig to switch back and forth. I ran into W4OC (A) on 40 meters Saturday night; he was about 200 ahead of my 200 + qso total. It will be interesting to see how Don finished in the final results. The more I worked the contest the more enthusiastic I became, especially after a good 2 hour run on 75 meters Saturday night. The all time SE division high score for SO/LP is held by K4XS. He has something like 290,000 points, so not much chance to beat his record. My best hourly rate was on 75 meters, at 0300 Saturday night, 124 qso's using the 3 element wire beam pointed NE. The next best hour was on 20 meters at 1300, with 87 qso's. I had 20 band changes and operated 21.5 hours. I only said (example) KX6XXX Number and A, then the keyer said K4JRB Check 57 GA. Could have put more into the keyer but will wait until I have the PC set up in the shack The bands seemed to have plenty of empty space (even 20) and the wide spaces on 10 had activity from 28301 to just above 28600. Think K4BAI mentioned this also. After 2 days of calling MFJ, posting on the internet, some kind soul finally sent me the color coding for the output line to the rig. MFJ was supposed to ship the unit with a plus installed, but mine got here with a spare 8 pin plug and the cable cut off. Spent 1.5 hours on the phone with their Tech Support to no avail. They did not know the color coding. I kept asking, "Take one and remove the mike shell....but they said that was not a practice. Incidentally, for the kind soul who did send me the info, green is NOT the PTT line. It is Black. White is the audio hot and the bare stranded wire is ground. Since it's obviously working for him, can't say much except Green might be the VOX wire. The OMNI VI+ has a 4 pin mic connection for hot audio, PTT, ground, and +4 vdc for those mics that need voltage. MFJ in the manual specifically said not to use the chassis ground for the audio in ground, but I didn't have a choice. Anyway, in testing the unit with "CQSS K4SB" before the contest, my several contacts were unable to tell me which one was me and which was the keyer. Absolutely no hum or other problems. I had the above in the #5 slot, and "B K4SB CHECK 55 GA" in #4. The unit has 5 messages capability and I could have used 1 and 2 for it. OK, for remote control the thing has an 8 pin connector on the back, and of course, MFJ does not supply the male connector. But, I discovers that the small power supply cable used to power the floppy drives is an almost exact match. You have to file down the ears, but once that is done, 2 of them will give you wires off all 8 pins. Spent about an hour destroying an old 3 button mouse I had laying around, and wired the left button to #5 message and the right to #4. It's simple, just cut all the pcb leads from the center contact on the mouse, and hook your mouse wires to the message you want + a wire from the common ground in the mouse to the GND of the 8 pin socket. MFJ is on my s*** list right now. I bought a brand new T2X from them, the thing didn't work, I opened up the rotor and it looked like someone had dumped a trash can in it. Filthy with small bits of left over wire, dirt, and dust. Plus some of the bearings had rust spots. Needless to say, a call to the VP of Hy-Gain ( they are still running them as separate divisions ) got me a completely new set of bearings, grease, and a new control box the next day. Cleaned it up, put it together and with the new box, it took off like a bandit. Incidentally, I wound up not using it ( repaired an older one which needed a new drive gear, so, it's brand new in the box, never used, and available at a substantial discount if anyone's interested. All in all, I would recommend the 434, but make sure it's got a mic connector on it. Internal jumpers let you select Yaesu ( default ), Kenwood of Icom. Takes about a min to set them. If nothing else, the very fact I never once called CQ except with the keyer made it worth while. Hope this helps Nice going guys.. 73 Ed -- SECC on the Web: http://secc.contesting.com/ Submissions: secc@contesting.com Administrative requests: secc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-secc@contesting.com From k4no@ispchannel.com Wed Nov 22 03:39:50 2000 From: k4no@ispchannel.com (greg richard) Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 21:39:50 -0600 Subject: [SECC] k4bai Message-ID: <008501c05435$df2ad520$5ef280ce@huntsville.mediacom.ispchannel.com> This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0082_01C05403.93D7C380 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable K4BAI was just spotted on 75 meters 3793 8P9HT Greg K4NO ------=_NextPart_000_0082_01C05403.93D7C380 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

Heard some of the boys say that this was the best conditions ever. Not from my point of view. As a matter of fact, no where near last year's CW. The noise was S9+ on 160 and 80 Friday night. And Saturday night it was very difficult to work the Euros, even though they were loud. It was kinda like one-way skip...I know that's impossible, but W4AN and I talked about the same thing happening on 80 a few years ago. Maybe there was local QRN in Europe. Would like to know if W4PA experienced the same thing. The big bad prop prediction I saw was a bunch of hooey. The highest the A index got, I think was 16, and that was late Sunday after the "storm" hit. Now that was interesting....I was running Europe on 10, and S&P'ing with the 2nd radio on 15, when I heard what I thought was line noise...on both bands. Then at exactly 1645Z, the noise went away, and so did Europe. The only signals I could hear on ANY band was stateside. Then about in 10 minutes or so, the Euros slowly came back and I was able to run again around 1700Z. Weird, but not a big thing. I wanted to break the all time USA records on SO LP single band 10 mtrs and I was able to do this for both SSB and CW contests. The SSB test was a lot of fun and had no problems but CW was a different story. The Stackmatch would only let me select any 2 of the 4 for this past weekend so mostly ran with the top 2 and switched to the old stack for South America and ZL. Somebody slammed the door to Europe a little before 1700 Sunday morning and while it came back; it wasn't the same. Hi SECC'ers, I was not up to doing a serious effort but wanted to contribute something to the SECC club score. For those that didn't operate the contest, the bands were full of tricks this past weekend. I found it hard to make qso's on 80 and 160 with the QRN from the rain storm passing through and the poor band conditions. Something killed two of my beverages and the rotor stuck to the South on the 10/40 meter beam Friday night. I was able to get the rotor going on Saturday morning but have not checked the beverages. I was working a CO8 on 10 meters Sunday morning at approximately 11:45 EST and noticed the noise level suddenly increased. When I starting tuning around the bands were almost dead. The most fun I had was while working stations across the North Pole via aurora on Sunday evening. There were only a few stations crossing the pole with any tone in the CW signal. This brought back old memories of the days when I worked the VHF bands and was able to make contacts during an aurora on 2 and 1.25 meters. It is rare that aurora will allow propagation on the VHF bands this far south so when it happens its a lot of fun. The10 meter band seemed to be the best band for operating during the test. The high solar flux really helped the conditions but the solar disturbances seem to hurt conditions as well. I missed zone 22,26,29 and 36, on 10 meters. The 10 meter contest will be a big event this year, especially if the solar flare activity continues over the next two weeks. NO9E, Ignacy Misztal, came up and operated my second station on Saturday evening. He used his call and operated high power all band, except the one I was on at the time..Hi. He came in first place US last year in the SP contest operating from here. I think he won the contest because he is from Poland and he can speak the language????. I hope to get him active in the SECC but for now his schedule is very busy at UGA. Ignacy brought me some imported OK beer for the contest, I didn't drink any but still had a head ache on Sunday morning for some reason. Hope to work you on 160 this weekend. I don't have any plans other than to just get on. I'd like to formally congratulate Ron on setting a new GA low-power record for the SSB SS. The previously record was 158,312 set by AB4RU in 1992. So, Ron bested his previous record. I'm sure he'll lose a few points in the judging, but it should be enough to hold the record. Great job, Ron! I'll probably operate the CW Sprint, too. CQWW 160 CW is an uncertainty -- I hope to either have antennas back up or a place to operate that one (especially after missing ARRL 160). 73, Gary K9AY ------------ > > >Like Gary, my next big one will be ARRL DX CW. > > What?! For comparison, my 1998 North American record score was just over 6500 QSOs and 10.4 M. After log checking, it was just a tiny bit under 10 M. But that year the computer would send CW. This year, my two interfaces wouldn't work and I had to send all those 7000 (including duplicates) calls by hand at least once. I did have a memory keyer that would send CQ, 5998, and TU 8P9Z, but the buttons were not as convenient as the F keys (and the + key) on a keyboard. Oh well, maybe before next trip I can get one of you guys to help me out and see what went wrong. More later. Thanks for all the QSOs. 73, John, K4BAI/8P9HT, Opr 8P9Z. --------------75EC710F7560 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: Received: from mail03.rapidsite.net ([207.158.192.52]) by mtiwgwc25.worldnet.att.net (InterMail vM.4.01.03.10 201-229-121-110) with SMTP id <20001130201326.HRSJ17916.mtiwgwc25.worldnet.att.net@mail03.rapidsite.net> for ; Thu, 30 Nov 2000 20:13:26 +0000 Received: from www02.hway.net (207.158.192.82) by mail03.rapidsite.net (RS ver 1.0.58s) with SMTP id 05997474 for ; Thu, 30 Nov 2000 15:13:20 -0500 (EST) Received: (from hornuc@localhost) by www02.hway.net (8.9.1a/8.9.1) id PAA8973716; Thu, 30 Nov 2000 15:13:19 -0500 (EST) Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 15:13:19 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200011302013.PAA8973716@www02.hway.net> To: k4bai@worldnet.att.net Subject: CQWW CW 8P9Z SOAB HP From: k4bai@worldnet.att.net X-Loop-Detect: 1 CQ Worldwide DX Contest - CW Call: 8P9Z Operator(s): K4BAI/8P9HT Station: 8P9Z Class: SOAB HP QTH: Barbados Operating Time (hrs): 48.0 Summary: Band QSOs Zones Countries ------------------------------- 160: 125 9 19 80: 563 20 67 40: 1188 24 85 20: 1123 31 86 15: 1200 29 94 10: 2107 32 95 ------------------------------- Total: 6306 145 446 = 9,683,535 Club/Team: SECC Comments: Posted using 3830 Score Submittal Forms at: http://www.hornucopia.com/3830score/ --------------75EC710F7560-- -- SECC on the Web: http://secc.contesting.com/ Submissions: secc@contesting.com Administrative requests: secc-REQUEST@contesting.com Problems: owner-secc@contesting.com
