Well, at the KS4YT/KV4T site (used the call KS4YT: multiop with KV4T) =
there was a prevalence of Murphy's Law coming into play. We began to =
think there might be a problem with the antenna when we had a hard time =
getting people to answer us, and we knew we had a problem with the =
antenna, when K4WI and KX4X could barely hear us (both stations, of =
course, within our home state). Allan and a friend of ours tried =
valiantly to find out what the problem was, but with it being after =
dark, the answer didn't come easily. After 31 contacts, an SWR of =
infinity, and an amp acting strangely (even with a lowered SWR), we were =
off the air for the night, this occurring about 2:00 UTC.=20
Saturday morning Allan climbed the tower and found that the antenna was =
burned at the top and completely melted into the 80m loop. So yes, =
there was a problem with the antenna! Allan's main regret was that we =
didn't get to see the fire. ;-) So to try to make up for a lost =
evening, we went through the night, in spite of a noise floor that was =
very high (as others have mentioned) and the fact that we also seem to =
have lost our beverage to the Southeast and our receive loop (which =
usually helps quite a bit with stateside contacts). No real DX at all =
for us, just KP4, XE, and YV. We did end up with 222 Q's, 482 points, =
and 49 sections, with a total score of 25, 064. States missed were AK, =
HI, VT, RI, ND, and UT, as well as the section of DC, VY1, and sections =
under VE1/9. I heard many of the sections we missed on Friday...did not =
hear them Saturday night (our burned antenna seemed to make a wonderful =
receive antenna...things sounded great on Friday night!). So the =
experience was frustrating, but still had fun in the contest. So =
there's our sad experience for the weekend!
