Hi: I thought some of you might be interested in the results of the
August QRP Spartan Sprint. This is held the first Monday night of each
month, local US time, 9 to 11 PM Eastern, sponsored by the Adventure
Radio Society. Claimed scores are promptly posted to a website and this
type of report is received the same week of the contest. Note that
scores are lined up two different ways. The first is by weight of
equipment used. Here, you must weigh your rig, power supply, key,
keyer, tuner, etc. and it is a factor in determining where you place.
If your rig, like mine, weighs more than 30 pounds, you assume 30 pounds
(tubby) and you are more likely interested in the second listing of
scores, which is without regard for weight. Note that scores were
submitted by SECC members K4BAI, W4QO, and WA4TT. K4JPN and K4PQC are
also in GA. I heard and worked K4JPN, but the others must have skipped
over. I can avoid some of that by getting the SO2R set up going again
and I will be listening to 40 earlier, maybe before the skip gets too
long for local QSOs. K4NVJ in AL was also active, as was AB9CD in AL.
Some of the others of you might like to join in on a future month. 73,
John, K4BAI.

Results of the August 2006 Spartan Sprint

Twenty meters folded early and QRN roared on the lower bands. It made
for a tough night and a difficult Sprint this month. Most of the
activity was on 40 meters between crashes. But, lots of repeats and QRP
operating skills came through for those who hung in there. Most called
it an early night with their ears ringing from the noise.

As a result of the poor conditions, total logs this month totaled only
64. That's down 21 from last month.

Here's the band statistics:
Band This Month Last Month
80M - 29 23 QSOs
40M - 633 701 QSOs
20M - 485 1079 QSOs
15M - 1 1 QSOs
10M - 1 1 QSOs
Total - 1149 1805 QSOs

Skinny Division Winners -
The competition in the featherweights is tough and you need to be under
a quarter pound and have about 20 contacts to be in the running. W1MT
was again top Skinny. Mike managed 19 contacts with his .113 pound setup.

K4PQC Phil took second place with more QSOs than Mike, 24 contacts, but
more weight by .043 pounds. That's about two- thirds of an ounce!

Third place went to Andy W5ACM who was just over a quarter pound for his
20 QSOs.

Tubby Division Winners -
Ken N6RO was the big (Tubby) winner this month with just under 100
contacts on three bands. Twenty was still open in the west and Ken took
full advantage.

John K4BAI was a distant second with three bands and 20 meters most
productive.

Randy K7TQ took third by evenly splitting his time between 40 and 20. He
was just one contact behind John.

Special Recognition, Outside Operation -
WA8REI - I op'd from the front porch, near dark at the start of the
Sparty. 68 to 64 degrees F. and 40% DEET to ward off the skeeters.

N9OHW - Operating position: in the backyard, near Chicago. This was my
first Spartan Sprint. I operated from a backyard near Chicago after a
family reunion.

N8RN - Operated portable off of front porch in kind of muggy wx.
Portable Ant: Wire thrown over tree limb with one ground radial.

K3TW - A severe thunderstorm developed just minutes before the start of
the Sprint, and at exactly 01Z I lost power! Even though power was
restored within a few minutes, I had already disconnected all my
equipment instead of risking lightning damage. The storm passed an hour
later, so I decided to try operating outdoors to make a few contacts.
After routing an antenna coax cable outside, I was ready to go. The
ambiance of the outdoors more than compensated my disappointment of
missing another competitive Sprint. Don't miss the opportunity and
excitement that outdoor operating offers. It's truly ham radio at its best.

N9NE - I operated from my patio with the K2, a 7 AH SLA battery, and a
42.5' wire with a 7.5' counterpoise. This was a test setup in
preparation for a three-week drive 'out west' with coastal OR as the
destination. The wire was four feet off the ground at its highest!

DX Logs -
No DX this month. Not even Laci could make it across the pond for August.

Late Logs -
In July N1NFG had 8 QSOs using indoor antennas and W4NJK had 4 contacts.

RESULTS -
Each contact received one point. If you didn't tell us the weight of
your station, or if your station weighed more than 30 pounds, we
assigned a weight of 30 pounds.

The soapbox is published separately in the ARS Sojourner, which comes
out soon. Don't miss it! http://www.ARSqrp.com

We hope everyone had a good time. See you in September.
