   Have you ever though of maybe phased verticals for 40 meters ??  I have have a wire vertical with 4 elevated radials for 40 and it out performs my zepp @ 35 feet most of the time on DX. I couldn't hear VU7RG on the zepp very well but worked them only after being in the pileup 5 minutes with the vertical. Maybe even consider a half-square or bobtail. This would good too.

A 4 -square would work good on 40 but you would need to by a Comtex phasing box which is around $400. See the manual on the Hygain Hightower at http://www.hy-gain.com/man/pdf/AV-18HT.pdf
