This Week's Contests:

1. Straight Key Night.  24 hours of Thursday UTC.  Use hand key or bug, 
if possible.  Send "SKN" instead of "RST" before the report.  Send in to 
ARRL a list of stations worked and your vote for:  (1) Best fist heard. 
  (2)  Most interesting QSO had or heard.

2.RTTY Round Up Practice Sessions.  0230-0300 Friday and Saturday UTC 
(Thursday and Friday evenings, local) and 2200-2230 UTC Friday.  Use 
RTTY Round Up rules (no dupes).  Check around 080 on each band plus 050 
on 40 meters.

3.  No NCCC CW NS or SNS this Thursday.  Regular 40M QRP Fox Hunts, 
Thursday night local (0200-0330 UTC Friday).  Two foxes between 7030 and 
7050.  These will be K9CW, Drew, IL and KI0G.  Exchange:  RST, SPC, 
Name, Power.  Maximum power 5W.  Work only the two Foxes.

4.  ARRL RTTY Round Up.  18Z Sat to 24Z Sun.  80-10M RTTY, Digital (not 
CW).  Maxiumu operating time:  24 hours.  Exchange RST + S/P.  If 
outside US and Canada, stations will send RST + serial #.

5.  European CW Association 160M Contest.  Two periods:  20-23Z Sat. 
04-07Z Sun.  Each station may be worked in each of the two sessions. 
160M CW only, 1810-1840 kHz.  Exchange:  RST + Name + Club + Membership 
#.  Extra points for working offical EUCW Club Stations.  A number of 
clubs may be used, including FOC, HSC, FISTS, and QRPARCI.  If not a 
member of any member or associated club, send "NM" instead.

6.  Kids' Day Contest.  18-24Z Sunday.  80-10M SSB + 2M repeaters. 
Exchange:  name, age, QTH, favorite color.

7.  Adventure Radio Society January Spartan Sprint.  Monday night lcoal, 
0100-0400 UTC Monday.  80-10M CW.  5W maximum.  Exchange:  RST + SPC + 
power.


This is a light weekend for traditional contests on CW and SSB.  But, we 
can all get on the air, make contacts, and have fun, whether in a 
contest or not.  40 and 30 meters have been open short (and sometimes 
long) path to Europe during our mornings as late as 15Z or even later. 
17M has been open in the mornings to Europe and the Indian Ocean (look 
for VQ98JC or maybe Jim goes back to VQ9JC in the new year) and later to 
Africa and South America.  20M is open almost every day around 22 to 23Z 
to Japan.  40M also has nice Japan openings in the mornings as late as 
13Z.  40, 80, and 160 are open every evening to Europe and the Americas 
and many mornings to JA.  This time of the year brings us some of the 
very best low band conditions, while still having openings on the higher 
bands up to 17 and even 15 meters occasionally.  Look for some possible 
E skip openings on the high bands up to 6 meters in early January.
