Yes, the level of involvement matters.  As long as you have no
assistance in sending or receiving or mult spotting type activities
you're OK.  You could have an in-house tech repairing  radios and
antennas while you operated, but as long as you're the one making the
Qs, you're fine.  IMO, barring specific rules to the contrary.

Further, there are legal restrictions as to what an unlicensed
operator may or may not do on the air.
