My first experience operating remote via the internet of the station I
have operated from one to several times a year since 2004. It was
difficult for me, who likes to use a paddle and keyer, to be able only
to send CW with computer keys and not to have a side tone to warn me if
I have hit the wrong key. But, I did learn a little more than I had
known about the Flex rigs and how to operate them, but setting one up or
troubleshooting will forever be beyond me. Many thanks to WW4LL and
W9SN of BeLoud.us for the use of the station and for helping Jeff, KU8E,
set it up for me. Also thanks to Jeff for doing the set up and helping
me get acclimated to its use and for allowing me to operate from his
house where he has high speed internet and I do not. It was my first
time to operate both days of a 160M contest from PJ4. Once before eacg,
I did the first night of ARRL 160 and the first night of CQ 160 Phone.
I have worked a lot of 160 from the Caribbean and from this station with
same antennas, but with more conventional rigs and being on site and,
for the most part, having the use of receive antennas. These antennas
are put up temporarily for a limited number of weekend per year for
contest purposes. At least at this time, it will be impossible to have
receive antennas to be used remotely.
The contest itself started slowly as it started well before sunset on
Bonaire and the bands closed about an hour after sunrise. I worked a
lot of Europeans, a few in Western Asia, a few in North America, lots of
non US-VE stations in the western hemisphere, Hawaii, and two Japanese
QSOS on the first morning. I felt conditions might have been better the
first night. I was a bit surprised at the depth of callers with weak
signals from Europe and western Asia on the second night after working
most of the big stations on the first night. I thank W3DQ for the DC
QSO. I found no stations in NE and SD and the only Canadians worked
were in VE1, 9, 2, 3, 6 and 7. Was very disappointed that VE5UA was in
Alberta. It is only recently that Canadian hams have been changing
provinces without sending a portable designation. Thanks for all QSOs.
The log will be uploaded to LOTW by KU8E and any requests for paper QSLs
go to K4BAI. Bureau QSLs may be requested by e-mail to k4bai at att.net.
73, John, K4BAI.
