for some pictures of
our CQWW VHF contest adventure this weekend to rare grid
square EL79.
The antenna was a 6 meter rectangular loop on a 24 foot
mast. I also built a 2 meter version of this antenna but we didn't
bother putting it up since there was absolutely no
activity on 2 meters from northwest FL. While we were driving down we used a
5/8th
wave 2 meter mobile antenna , which BTW is resonant on 6
meters as well as 2. We spent a lot of time listening to KN4Y call CQ and if
he started working people we were ready to pull over and setup the real
antennas. BTW..We worked NP4A on this antenna. I was planning on building a
halo for when we were mobile but ran out of time.
It was my idea to try this and unfortunately for us condx
just plan sucked !!! I thought for sure the band would be open good based on
how it was leading up to the contest. BTW.. we did have VP5JM answer a CQ so
the antenna was working good. I'm pretty sure John will never want to try this
again. We will probably just stick to doing the GQP, FQP and AQP from now on.
I might give a
VHF contest another shot sometime again on one our family
beach vacations....
On the bright side my two boys - Andy and Randy , went
with us and we got to spend some fun time at the beach and at the pool of the
hotel.
We also had a great seafood dinner on Saturday night in
Apalachicola.
