Thank everyone for the replies.  My TS590 has a built in keyer and doesn't need an interface to key the rig. So despite years of using interfaces I had conveniently forgotten that most rigs, like a TS480, need one to generate CW.

kevin, not for sure with kenwood but every rig that i know about you need a seperate interface of some sort to key the rig via the key jack and rtty via the rtty jack. I use microHam keyer 2 via USB to the computer and it handles everything... gl 73's Cort K4WI

Does anyone know for sure if you can just connect a computer to a 480 via its DB9 port and send CW from a program like N1MM? I've been told that is not how it works and you need to build an interface to connect the computer to the hand key jack. I don't think you need that interface but have never done it so don't know for sure.
