In 1996, I set the Georgia section record for low power in CW SS.  That year, I made over half of my QSOs on 80m...it was a low year in the sunspot cycle, and 80m just worked better than 40.  I was lucky, in that I was operating from W4WA, and he had a 3 element wire yogi on 80 that certainly helped.

I do agree that 40 is probably the best band overall in SS, but do be aware, that it's not necessarily always true.

Go for it Dave!

I'm convinced, and I have discussed this seriously with a lot of top contesters....that you can come very close to winning any of the East Coast sections just by staying on 40 meters.  "There are no meters like 40 meters."

See you in the test....

I'm playing in the SS this weekend... My last decent SS score was in 2013 with 394 Qs. This was with a IC-730 and 40m dipole at 10 ft, paper logging on the dining room table. 311 of my Qs were on 40m. It was also one of my first contests after being 'mobile only' for many years. Now 3 years later, I'm shooting for a min of 600 Qs working the contest as time permits. My contesting skills have improved and I've relocated from dining room, added a G5RV and 80m dipole, rig IC-751 with N3FJP logging. All looks promising..

GL to all and listing for my  "BB gun" from SC.
