SEDXC member John, W4NU (ex K4JAG) has been called to active duty and is no
longer running his Dental practice. He hopes to be back in six months.
Another SEDXC member has been active in Kuwait off and on for a number of
years. Bob, 9K2ZZ is K4CY (ex N6BFM) and he is very active on 20 and 17
around 14205 and 18115.
Gus A92ZE (K4SXT) has been active from Bahrain for some time. He operates
mostly CW and is in many DX logs for the 2002 CQ 160 CW Contest. A quick
check of DX Summit shows him very active on 160 to 10. Recently he was on
21.300 SSB at 1800Z. Thanks to Dave K4SSU for pointing out he is from
Atlanta. I don't remember his ever being in the SEDXC. I do remember his
being active from other DX spots including a stint in the Philippines DU a
few years ago. Buckmaster only has A92ZE as Gus,
Bahrain but does list K4SXT as his QSL Manager.
Bahrain is a former British Colony with a major oil refinery that at one
point was jointly run by Chevron (Standard Oil of California), Shell, and
British Petroleum. A friend of mine Frank, W5DYJ was the Plant manager in
the early 1970's and was active as MP4BIN and later with a A92 call. Frank
had a six year stay there, 3 as the plant manager which was rotated through
the companies. Two former amateur radio operators there may be familiar to
old timers. Bob then MP4BCC was the British Chief of Police
and very active in the late 50's and early 60's. Bob retired to S79MC and
is now a silent key. MP4BBW, Ian was the first on SSB and was active on 20
SSB long path. He worked Wallace K4TJL almost daily
in 1959 to 1962. Most Dxers of the day have Ian's card for Bahrain DXCC
credit. He also held a EI call
and Sheridon., A92BE (now in HS) told me he had retired to Ireland and
living the life of a country gentleman. Besides the Oil Refinery, Bahrain
is a key Navy base for the United States. Although friendly with the USA
many in Bahrain do not like our support for Isreal.
